COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP)—Jack Tatum, the Pro Bowl safety for the Oakland Raiders best known for his crushing hit that paralyzed Darryl Stingley in an NFL preseason game in 1978, has died. He was 61.

Nicknamed “The Assassin,” Tatum, died of a heart attack Tuesday in an Oakland hospital, according to friend and former Ohio State teammate John Hicks. Hicks said Tatum had diabetes the past several years, and had lost his left leg because of circulation problems.

rip jack tatum and darryl stingley. hard to mention one without the other. jack had a great career but the stingley hit is what he'll always be remembered for most.

Jack Tatum was a great safety for the Ohio State Buckeyes before his legendary career with the Raiders. He was a great player and such an intimidating force that he really did keep people from even going over the middle when he was there. Those that did dare to go over the middle often did so carefully and were more aware of getting hit than catching the ball.
