The NFL’s Oakland Raiders are eyeing a possible move to San Antonio, according to a report in the San Antonio Express-News on Tuesday.
Raiders owner Mark Davis recently spent several days in the Alamo city with San Antonio officials and toured potential sites for his team.
The paper reports the team could move to San Antonio as soon as the 2015-16 season and play at the Alamodome. The Raiders would eventually like a new football stadium built for their use.
The reason for the Raiders’ move would be growing dissatisfaction with the team’s stadium in the aging O.co Coliseum. The team’s lease for the stadium expires at the end of the 2014-15 season.
Any relocation of the franchise would have to be approved by three-quarters of the NFL’s owners. The move would make for three NFL teams in Texas – the Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans and the San Antonio Raiders.
Teams have considered San Antonio as a potential city to relocate to, but have never gotten serious about the move. The Saints played regular season games in San Antonio after Hurricane Katrina chased them from the Superdome, but league officials convinced Saints ownership to return to New Orleans
