rain

Looks like the Dover race could be rained out. Why won't nascar get with goodyear and make a rain tire or whatever? Every other type of racing does it in the rain. Moto GP (motorcycles) races in the rain at insane speeds and those are road tracks for crying out loud.

Has nascar ever tried it?

You couldn't develop a tire that would stick in the rain on a track with the banking like Dover has.
There's enough carnage on that track at the best of times, I can't imagine with even a little moisture.

As technology evolves, I'm sure someone will find a way.

True enough, never say never. I understand tires, (worked in the lab at one of the Goodyear plants for almost 15yrs) and I just can't imagine how they could develop a compound to do the job with banking like that, the cars want to spin out as it is.

One of the biggest differences is how close the cars in NASCAR race together. Just imagine the rooster tail that would be produced by just one car. Don't know too many guys who would like to drive over 100 mph into something that they couldn't see. Even if they let the spotters tell them where the corners are, the spotters probably wouldn't even be able to see the cars. Racing on an oval in rain just simply isn't something that can be done. It's a different story on a road course.

IRL races on ovals in the rain? I think you are mistaken on that.

They raced most of it while it was raining. They try to get as much racing in that they can before calling it instead of postponing like nascar. They may not run a full race in the rain but they still do it.

I'm not trying to argue with anyone. I'm right, your wrong.

no, they didnt RACE in the rain..thay ran caution laps in the rain. And the drivers said they cars even then were hard to drive.

I'm right, your wrong.

No, actually you're not. Indy cars don't race in the rain. Some open wheeled cars run street/road courses on rain (treaded) tires, but the Indy 500 was not "raced" in the rain.

edited to say I'm done with this conversation.

Nascar will make every attempt to wait out the rain, and they have many times gone into a "rain delay" situation. Nothing different, actually, the exact same scenario as Indy last week

Rain has cleared out and it looks like they may race.

They won't get the whole thing in.

It's gonna start raining again within the next hour - it's raining here again after about an hour and a half of overcast.

I just went to noaa weather

and typed in DOVER, De. and got the radar... I see little chance of getting a race in for many hours.. Rain is almost to the track again.. I doubt they can get it dried before it comes again.
Betsy:(

I live (on the map) 70 minutes from the racetrack.

If you cross the Chesapake at Calvert, you could get there in 60-70 minutes. It's raining again here - it'll catch up to Dover shortly. Moving at 25 mph, I'd say an hour and a half window maximum.

I'm taking off tomorrow.

I was just trying to be a smartass about the "I'm right, your wrong" thing. Please don't take me seriously when I say stuff like that. I say it with sarcasm.

Anyway, nascar should race in the rain. Montoya would have an excuse for driving into people.

am i mistaken, or was that the quickest call ever? an hour after broadcast started...prety sure that's a quick call, but once they showed the radar i knew it'd be called.

There are no lights at Dover. They had to - it's a tropical depression, not a cold front (which I wish it was). It's been WAY TOO HOT around here and I don't have A/C in my car.

Why FOX?

They just made the call for me to miss ANOTHER NASCAR Nextel Cup event at the hands of FOX5.

Add this to the long list of races FOX-5 has dumped (they won't cover tomorrow) starting with the 2003 Daytona 500.

That's what PRN/MRN/satelite is for. We used to get los angeles and new york channels for some off reason before DTV caught the problem.

I'm in D.C. and our FOX station WILL NOT cancel their news broadcasts, 3 entertainment news broadcasts or anything. Never have (not even for 9-11 or Virginia Tech), never will.

It is pretty easy to understand why they do not race these cars in the rain. They are far too heavy and the amount of force they generate in the corners would lead to a race where everyone would wreck. They raced these cars once in Japan on a roadcorse in the rain. Looked like a bunch of school girls without drivers licenses running around the track. It just would flat out not work.

and that was only a practice session IIRC not the actual race itself.

They tried to race in the rain at the Winston one year. That didn't work out too well either. At least they tried to start it in the rain. They ended up letting the ones who wrecked get out back-up cars because they hadn't completed a lap. LOW and BEHOLD guess what happened. JEFF GORDON WON.

I remember that race...what a mess that was....

I know and I was there. It was really a mess there. I never get up and go under the bleachers it is too crowded and smothery. Besides if you get up your seat gets wet. LOL. I always put on my poncho and sit there covering up my seat with the sides of my poncho.

I remember them qualifying in the rain at Watkins Glen. NASCAR had special rain tires on reserve but NASCAR beat mother nature and Mark Martin beat the whole field for his second straight Watkins Glen victory.
