Raines to the #30 AOL Chevy?

One new name being mentioned for the #30 seat is that of Tony Raines, who is completing his Winston Cup rookie season in the #74 Chevrolets owned by BACE Motorsports. America Online has another year on its deal, so team owner Richard Childress needs a driver who'll take a one-year commitment. "I've heard that I've been talking to him," said Raines, who starts 33rd in today's Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500. "I don't know how to answer that." Raines' current team, owned by Bill Baumgardner, has run without a primary sponsor all year. His best finish was 14th at Richmond, Va., in May. He's made the field for 32 of 33 races.(Charlotte Observer), so if Raines leaves does Johnny Benson consider the #74 ride since he drove for BACE in the Busch Series and won a champiobship with the team?(

Tony Raines would be a good addition for the year. I know Harvick really respects him and they get along fairly well. So I could see this happening.

good move for tony bad move fo johnny if it plays out that way

Yeah seriously, I think Raines would do very well in a well funded RCR car.

He's shown some potential in the 74 this season and had run well in his Busch races. It would be great for him to get a good ride and get out of that small market team.

Johnny benson to the 74? seems alot like Shrader going to the 49 before this year. Any remote chance of winning maybe out of the question. Career suicide for Benson. :(

Tony Raines reminds me a lot of Kulwicki. He's got talent, and I think he would do fairly well in the #30.

Add Travis Kvapil to the list of drivers for the #30 car. reported on Jayski.com

and Raines has seen success in Busch Series and has finished decently in the underfunded, under-equipped 74 car. I wonder what he can do with a powerhouse like RCR. Let's hope that 30 car sees some more resources going it's way.

I was sorta hoping that Benson would go to the 30 but don't look that way now.

ALSO from Jayski.com
“We’re back to square one”. Those were the words from one member of Richard Childress Racing after he was asked about Jeremy Mayfield staying put with his current #19 for the 2004 season. Apparently Childress, along with GM officials, was somewhat surprised as word spread through the NASCAR Winston Cup garage that Mayfield had inked a deal keeping him in Evernham’s Dodge. It’s not known how far down the path Mayfield had gotten in his talks with Childress, but judging by the amount of concern shown in the affected camps it was likely very far. With Mayfield off the table names that were advanced included Johnny Benson, who was formally told this week that he’d not be returning to the #10 Valvoline Pontiac in 2004 and John Andretti. Also talked about was 2003 Indy Racing League Champion, Scott Dixon, who recently tested very well in a Cup car, at Kentucky

I doubt Dixon will go to RCR in Nextel Cup, I dont think Chip Gannassi would allow it.

Why not Mike Wallace? He proved last year what he could do in a well funded car.

Any one of the Wallaces would make a nice addition to the team.

Kenny Wallace is rumored to be going back to the Busch Series with BDR so I think he'd feel inclined to seek a new ride with a Nextel Cup Team.

Mike Wallace currently has no ride, he did finish in the top 10 at Daytona and has had some good runs at the Superspeedways. It would be nice to see him in the 30.

Tony Raines has had a good first season with the #74 team, so I'd be surprised to see him jump shifts unless the #74 didn't know if they were going to race the full season next year. Other than sponsorship, the #30 and #74 have been running about the same this year! It would be interesting to see Benson back with the #74 team, though.

Benson is rumored to be going in the 74 next year since Riggs will replace him in the 10.

When did Benson race in the #74?
He didn't actually drive the #74. He drove for the owners of the #74, BACE Motorsports.

Didn't Benson win a championship with that team in the Busch series?

Ahhh, thank you.

I'd like Raines to go to the 30. Benson on the other hand, I have no idea where he would go.

Yep in 1995 with BACE Motorsports.
Who was the sponsor?...I know... I wanna see how good everyone's memory is B)

Maybe they can work out a deal that allows Tony to go to RCR and Johnny to replace him...at least Johnny would be woth some familier company and Tony in a potentially good car.

OH by the way I think i know where JB is going to wind up, and if it comes true I think it will be cool. Not 100% sure ( never can be with SIlly Season) I think an announcment will be made in the next month or so. With the way it looks the whole #10 team may be leaving so that might help the process along with getting this ride since it is a new team and sponsor. The only thing I don't like is the possible number that may be used.

Wanna know with who it is? I will tell you later when I find out a little more info!

Just heard Ken Schrader has a good shot at the 30 car fo r next year.

RCR wants to sign someone to a 1-year contract. Schrader is the best bet for that. AOL is only signed for 1 more year, and Schrader is on his last tank so to speak, so it makes for a decent combo.

Although I would love to see Raines get a stable ride, what he has done with the sponsorless and underfunded #74 car is remarkable.

Tony Raines is an incredible driver. I wish he would have gotten this ride. But may be Ken can do something in a good car and team. He hasnt had a good team in a while.

Raines did good today, and so did Kenny until Ryan Newman ran him into the wall...

RCR shouldve gotten Scott Riggs when they had the chance. Now they should perhaps try to court maybe another driver from the Busch Series whos been in the Busch Series for about a while but havent been able to secure Cup rides, like maybe Kasey Kahne (that is, if he doesnt go to the 9), Ashton Lewis or Hank Parker Jr.

I am sure Ken is just a one year deal and they are getting ready to bring up someone from Busch in 2005. Im guessing Johhny Sauter.

I saw it on Jayski that word has leaked that its an official deal, Ken Schrader to the #30 AOL Chevy in 2004.

http://timesargus.com/Sports/Story/74485.html

Veteran Kenny Schrader will be the new driver of Richard Childress' No. 30 AOL Chevrolet in 2004. Steve Park will not return next season, and Childress has delayed an announcement for nearly a month. Early speculation centered around Ward Burton and Jeremy Mayfield, but AOL reportedly vetoed Burton, and Mayfield recently re-signed with Evernham Motorsports.

Schrader will leave the BAM Racing team to take his new position with Childress. BAM has struggled to find major sponsorship this season, and has nothing in place for 2004. Team owner Beth Ann Morgenthau has said the team may not race a full schedule next season if a new backer cannot be found, prompting Schrader to look for a new position with more job security.

Expect an announcement as soon as this weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
