RATE THE RACE: Atlanta

I'm going to have to give it a 9.

Tickets need to be lowered at this track so I can get to one of them. Been to Nationwide and Trucks here but I want to see a Cup Race here.

The best part about it, no artificial bull**** caution to tighten the field up. Just one of those classic Atlanta Motor Speedway finishes.

yeah, I was sweating that a little, but I was thinking more that some backmarker spinning.

Race was an 8, with an incredible finish. That's how 9 championships wheel it to the finish.

Exciting restarts and good action in the pits.
Funny interview by Boyer. I was hoping for more postrace action from him and Montoya, though.
Nice run by Stewart.:beerbang:

The last laps were as good as it gets. I also loved the ESPN piece at the end to commemorate Gordon's accomplishment. Interesting to hear Jimmie Johnson, of all people, say he thinks Gordon will hold sole possession of 3rd place "forever" on the all-time wins list. Guess even he feels he will never catch him.

Great race.

Maybe he doesn't think Gordon can catch and pass Pearson :D

IMO, JJ will get 90+ in his career. He's 37, and has averaged almost 6 wins for each of his 9 full seasons run. Averaging 4.5 wins for the next 10 years isn't out of the question.

Solid 8. Atlanta continues to show why it's the best track on the circuit. Fans down there just won't support it enough.

It's not we won't support the races it's that we can't afford too. The good tickets cost way too much and the cheap ones are not seats worth really getting. If they lowered the prices they'd likely sell out cause of how great the races there are.

I'd give the race a 9-plus. What's not to like?

And as far as Jeffie catching Pearson, 4 more years with 5 wins per year would put him right there! Or 10 years with 2 wins per year would do the same...

But Pee Wee could certainly surpass Jimmie-Chad and Big Daddy. Remember, the MOFO just turned 26 and he already has 23 CUP wins- in only 247 starts. Project that same 10% winning percentage (approx) for another 20 years and he would have; let's see...

3.6 X 20 = 72
72 + 23 = 95

And we all know that Pee Wee can win more than his career average in any given year.

Nobody will ever catch Petty and that's how it should be. Pearson ran for 27 years with (sometimes) many more races per year (he ran 51 of 54 races with 11 wins in 1969) than the current 36 race schedule and won at an 18% clip. It won't be easy but catching Pearson could be done!

BTW, I love this racing-reference site!!

There are lots of ways to look at the numbers. Kyle has 247 starts and 23 wins, while Pearson rarely ran a full season, and has 3 championships and 105 wins in 574 starts. Kyle gets 36 starts a year, while Pearson averaged just 21 per year. In fact, Pearson ran more than 22 races in just 5 seasons. It's likely that Kyle will finish his career with twice as many starts as Pearson had and 1/8th as many DNF's due to mechanical failure, which in reality gave Pearson half as many chances to win a race each year than Kyle gets now.

Kyle's win average is way below Pearsons, Gordons, Johnsons and a bunch of others, but he started younger than any of those and has a chance to rack up a lot of cup wins even with a lesser average. Right now, Kyles claim to fame is trucks and NW. I really wish he would stop playing around and concentrate on cup. His talent is wasted in those series.

I'll give it a 8.5, it was a good finish, classic duel at the end. Like a few other people said, it was nice not to see that last minute caution flag.

Rate the race: Give it a 10.0. Never gave a rating of ten in all the years I've been here but considering: changing track conditions, rain delays, level of competition and difference minor adjustments make, etc..
This race was not manipulated by NASCAR and when it came down to the end, it was two of the very best putting on one heckuva show!

Don't forget the possibility Chad and Jimmy going in different directions. I could easily make a difference just as watching the intensity Jimmy races with is nearly unsustainable for continued periods. He has done okay so far but is due to stall before long. At 37, and with a child in the mix, I wouldn't place any bets on JJ maintaining the high percentage winning and championship status quo.

True Whizzer, but I also seeing JJ go for more wins if he's off this championship kick he's been on. ;)

I always wonder where Jeff would be if Evernham stayed on. IMO, he would be well past Pearson by now.

Well I finally got to see it run so I'm happy! Thanks to the network for running the last 75 or so laps commercial free. It was sure exciting to see the two leaders throwing their cars around dirt track style for several laps! I'll give the sum of the parts an 8+.
