RATE THE RACE: Talladega, part one.

Race: 10. Breathtaking from start to finish.

Finish: 3, I just wish NASCAR would've let Montoya whip that boy's azz.

Coverage: 2. Too many commercials, too many on-baord cameras, too many missed lead changes, too many missed wrecks, etc, etc. FOX has almost (by a small margin) been as bad as ESPN was last year. It's a shame because I was really looking forward to FOX's coverage. But their production has been a huge let down this year.

I will have to give it a 9. Haven't seen such good racing at 'Dega in years.

I did not get to watch very much of the race, so i guess i really can not rate. The last few laps over the radio the guys were going crazy.

That's because they're too busy selling t-shirts.

They always do that. You have to for radio.

I'll give it a 9.5 with 0.5 off for the anti-climatic ending and that one stretch were not much went on.

9.5. Only reason it doesn't get a 10 is because the last lap crash deprived us of what could have been a hell of a finish. 3 hot-heads up front, with a couple more behind them that could've thrown a wrench in the works in the tri-oval.

I have to add that I think it was by far the best race so far this year.

TV coverage was crap as usual. Luckily I had the sound muted and the radio on. Funny how many times I heard the radio guys start calling three wide, or someone going up high or down low, only to see nothing but a screen full of someone's hood from the stupid rear bumper cam.

Montoya was gonna give Rowdy a real asswhoopin' out there. Kyle should've thanked NASCAR for throwing the yellow flag ensuring his victory.

They did it right a few years ago at Daytona letting them race back. But, it seems like every year this race ends under yellow.

It's too bad NASCAR spoiled a good finish not letting them race back. Montoya would've won that race, and NASCAR knows it. I just wanted to see how Kyle would react to getting spun out on the last lap. He seems to like wrecking other people out - and I'm not sure he has the maturity to take what he dishes out. Too bad NASCAR and FOX love him so much, they took away the best chance of letting us find out.

The finish was a 3, but the last lap was a 0. I just think NASCAR knows what certain drivers are gonna do and that factors in on whether they throw a yellow or not on the last lap. NASCAR ruined what would've been one for the ages.

Actually, I have to disagree. In a lot of cases on the big tracks, they should let 'em race back. But in this one that made the right call. Since the finish line is almost a turn one, and that's where the wreck was, I think allowing them to race back would have been a recipe for disaster. Anywhere from turn three on, (maybe as far as the back stretch) they should let 'em race, but anything before that can be a bad thing. Remember, with 10 or more cars bunched up in one and two, and the safety crews needing to respond, seeing 4, 5 or 7 cars running full open to the start-finish line at Dega ain't a smart move.

I am disappointed that it ended under caution too, but saying that they shoulda let 'em race back is just too dangerous in this situtation. There's just not enough time for them to slow down before turn one there.

[sarcasm alert]No, no. You just don't understand the entertainment value. I say let's do away with the yellow and red flags. Let's just let'em race. If there's a huge wreck between them and the finish line then they navigate the carnage the best they can. Or, they become a part of it.
If there's debris on the track and they're not smart enough to drive around it then they deserve to become a twisted heap of burning metal. Why think of the strategy of trying to force your competitor into and over different pieces of debis. What a way to win.
What a truly grand circus we would have then...[/sarcasm alert]

The wreck was behind them, BP.

They let 'em race back at Daytona. I don't see any big difference here.

I thought there was a one-car spin in turn one and the big one in turn 2.

I guess more of my frustration with Kyle goes towards NASCAR. They should've put a stop to letting NSC drivers running for the Busch and Truck championships after Harvick proved it was a joke, and did so twice.

Me too.

We were wrong. The wreck was on the BACKSTRETCH, OFF OF TURN 2. Not even in the same zip-code as turn 1.

It is what it is.

Prediction: Juan Pablo Montoya wins at Darlington.

Actually, the wreck was in turn 2. I was wrong about turn 1 (watched the replay again). The one-car spin was in the tri-oval. But I stand by my statement that, especially at 'Dega, that the yellow flag needed to come out, given the proximity of the start/finish line to turns one and two. Just don't think it's a good idea to run to the checkers in that situation. Had it happened further down the back stretch, or in 3/4, I could see it, as it would've given a lot more time for the front runners to slow down after the checkered flag fell before reaching the wreckage again, but not in turn 1/2. There was too much wreckage, to much of a chance for rescue vehicles to be in the way when the leaders came by with not enough chance to slow down.

Take off your anti-KB glasses for a second, and look at common sense. Let's not put safety crews in harms way if it can be avoided.

I do like your prediction though, and would like to see it happen.

That explains Martinsville and California then, doesn't it?

Up till the yellow at the end it was a solid 9. Pablo would have spun Kyle without a doubt for the win, I think, and I would have been ok with that because it would have made for the best final lap in a long time. Kyle, Montoya and Hamlin fighting for the finish line would have been awesome. We will never know who would have had the bigger coconuts for that win.

the guy in 4th ;p

I think the last 30 laps or so were an 8 or 9. Prior to that, there were a few exciting times, but then it was sort of blah for a bit there, so I'll give that a 7. I do agree, it was the best race so far this year. Oddly, I read on other boards where they thought most of the race was a snooze because of the car of TODAY. ;)

If Juan spun Kyle, the race is over.

I think that was JPM's race. :idunno:

PREDICTION: Juan Pablo Montoya wins Darlington, wins Daytona II, wins on a road course.

I wonder how much of that goes to his new Crew Chief.
