ESPN's live telecast of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway on Sunday, Oct. 9, earned a 3.1 household coverage rating, averaging 4,173,000 viewers, according to the Nielsen Company. The rating is up from a 2.7 for last year's Kansas race. This year, the Kansas race was the fourth event in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. Last year, the fourth race in the Chase was at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif., and that corresponding race earned a 2.9 rating. Of the four Chase races run so far this year, the three that have been run and telecast and scheduled have all had ratings increases from last year.

It's good to see the ratings improve but I still have to wonder where they'd be today had they never moved the Chase races away from ABC. While the ratings are up compared to last year, which was also televised on ESPN, they are still down significantly over the same races being televised on ABC in the years prior.

ABC's live telecast of the Bank of America 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Saturday night, Oct. 15, earned a 3.2 U.S. rating, averaging 5,396,000 viewers, according to the Nielsen Company. The rating is even with the rating for last year's race, which also aired on ABC on a Saturday night. ESPN2's live telecast of the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Charlotte on Friday night, Oct. 14, earned a 1.1 household coverage rating (1.0 U.S. rating), averaging 1,543,000 viewers. Last year's race, which aired on ESPN2 on a Friday night, earned a 1.3 household coverage rating.
