Ray Everham on tires

Saw him on tv. According to him the COT tires are smaller in diameter than what was used on the car of yesteryear. The COT weighs more and transfers more weight to the right side tires. (doesn't explain a couple of left rears that have blown) Being smaller they rotate faster, wear faster, build more heat and are inflated to a higher pressure. In the old tire a slight cut allowed the tire to deflate, in the new tire that's spinning faster with higher temps and pressure a slight cut results in rapid deflation, almost like a expolsion.

Looks good on paper,,,,,

Makes sense, Ray has a lot more knoweldge than I do for sure. I also remember reading something that said of all the Nascar divisions, Cup has the smallest tires. Now that doesn't make any sense, but I have no doubt that it's true. I'd really like to see wider, bigger tires on the top-tier cars.

I thought that nwide and cup used identical tires/tire codes?

If you can imagine this, our FSAE open wheel cars have 6.5" wide tires that are 21" tall on a 15" carbon fiber rim i believe

Since the cars want to roll over onto the rights, they try to make the cars have more bite and get on the lefts. If they go too far, the tires won't last.

It's not just the COT tires. What he was saying is that over the years, the tire diameter has gotten smaller. They were getting smaller on the pre-COT car, too.

I think you're right, many times I've read that truck or NW cars run the same tire as cup when they have the companion races.
Wonder if they'll go to a larger, meaning a taller tire next year? What a nightmare that will be changing front end geometry and ride height!
When we had to change tire brands at the local track. Cars that usually ran on rails train wrecked and vice versa, some bad handling cars actually ran better.

In any case Goodyear has to produce a tire that's reliable. Hamlin was real lucky.

getting your ride heights back wont be to bad. backing off the jackbolts and changing springs would fix that. Like you said though it would play with some front end geometry which for most guys is a night mare, but them full time guys got all the electronic stuff and suspention simulators to fix it.

I've heard they're thinking about going to a bigger wheel, but not a bigger tire. And yes, Goodyear has to make sure there are decent tires on these cars and Denny was lucky!

Well going to a bigger rim would certainly help with the heat issues of melting the bead on the short tracks. But if the diameter remains the same that means less side wall flex which will change the 'spring rate' of the tire, it'd make the tire stiffer. They're running absurdly low front spring rates now. Could they even consider going softer?

the splitter says no. Then again, they do have them bumpstops.

but they need to find out how to keep the bump stops from doing more damage to the race car than hitting the wall lol.

But i guess i havent heard of that happeneing the last few races. I remember it being a big problem at the beginning of the year.

Well, I've read several drivers are not fans of the bump stops.

Guys, it's not the COT.

There were numerous tire problems during the ARCA race as well, which runs a completely different car and tire.

ARCA Thunder suggested it might be the new quickie-dry they're using. After all, most of the problems have been on the big tracks.

And there were several tire problems during the ARCA and Spitcup races at Daytona.

The speedi-dry argument has been around a long time. Personally I find it more of an excuse than a reason but admit YMMV.:)

But it's a different formula this year. This is the only change ARCA and NASCAR have had in common.

But, from what I understand, the speedy-dry should be even less of a problem than last year because it more like a powder than the old kitty-litter stuff. Nothing that would cause a blow-out. And remember, Dale's tire blew out with NO speedy-dry on the track.

Karma catching up with them for taking rockingham off the schedule. Take away the most abrasive track so every track is going to abrasive and rip up tires lol.

But i heard said that jrs tire was a definite cut, something small must have been on the track. But like andy said just a few hours after that, the arca race had a ton of blow outs. Maybe the track crew was missing a bunch of little stuff on the track? Hoosier has always been good about bringing good tires.
