Press Conference Scheduled for Friday at Dover
WELCOME, N.C. (Sept. 22, 2004) -- Robby Gordon has been placed on probation by Richard Childress Racing (RCR) for the remainder of the 2004 NASCAR Cup Series season.

“Many athletes have made mistakes in their careers and would take back the negative things they’ve said or done if they could,” said Richard Childress, president and CEO of Richard Childress Racing. “As a result of his actions last weekend in New Hampshire, I have placed Robby on probation for the rest of the season.

“I would like to apologize to all of the fans, the media, and the teams. I also would like to publicly apologize to Cingular Wireless for being placed in this situation. If there is one positive, I think this can make Robby understand that there is more to racing than just being aggressive. In this sport today, one action can affect many people’s lives on the track and beyond it, as well.”

Gordon will conduct a press conference at 8:30 a.m. EDT Friday, Sept. 24, in the infield media center at Dover International Speedway.

If anything is gonna happen, it'll have to be something like this. God knows that NASCAR would never do anything to a chebbie driver. Goes against their religion.

I do, however, see the incredible irony in Richard Childress of all of God's creatures penalizing someone for rough driving. That's kinda like Fran Drescher penalizing someone for talking with an annoying accent. Oprah penalizing someone for being sexist. Spike Lee penalizing someone for being racist. janet Reno pealizing for being ugly. John Kerry penalizing for being stupid.

You get the idea.

Seems like they sat a certain Chevy driver down after a truck race....meanwhilst, a certain forp driver bragged about wrecking people and continue to drive.

Guess they though a punch in the nose was good enough.

Oops, they sat that fellow who threw the punch, who was also in a Chevy.

Try again..............

Old news, man...old news

Try and tell me Harvick didn't get what he deserved.

Try and tell me Spencer didn't get what he deserved.

Kurt got his on the track, and will continue to do so for some time.

Doesn't matter if Harvick and Spencer got what they deserved or not. You said that Nascar wouldn't do anything to a Chevy driver. Fergy just proved you wrong.

But its the same story, true? And do you think Busch has gotten what he deserves?

I'm not looking for anyone to take him or anyone else out. But you and I both know, as long as people are in motion...doesn't matter if they are driving, swimming, or crawling, sooner or later they will hit each other. Some more than others.... ;)

And as we both know, punishments will never be dished out the same or fairly given. You forps guys are always gonna say Nascar is more giving toward Chevy and we Chevy guys are always gonna say that forp has more pull....

RCR puts Robby on probation until the end of the season, I guess this pretty much means Robby is in the #31 ride up until the end of the season at least.

Yep

For all the talk about who NASCAR punishes or doesn't punish I find this more interesting:

“I would like to apologize to all of the fans, the media, and the teams. I also would like to publicly apologize to Cingular Wireless for being placed in this situation.

It sure sounds like Cingular Wireless is pretty unhappy with Robby and his "problems" on the track......and certainly what happened last Sunday. This is one situation where it seems to me that the sponsor stepped in with an iron fist. Putting Richard Childress in a position of apologizing for an employee's actions......I've never heard an owner do that publicly. Not even Joe Gibbs over some of Tony's stuff. I think NASCAR will level some sort of punishment in addition to Childress', but I think NASCAR's punishment will be more monetary and less severe. Robby not only pissed off a lot of fans, competitors, his own boss, the sanctioning body of his sport, but his sponsor..........and I can't believe Cingular will opt to sponsor any car (or vehicle) that Robby might be the driver of beyond this season. I'm sure Cingular made that very clear to Childress. Robby's out at the end of the season (or sooner). What's more, Robby really screwed up his resume........other potential sponsors will surely find out what Cingular thinks of him. That's sad............but he did make his own bed. Time to lay in it.

Didn't Home Depot fine Stewy one of the times he smacked someone? Maybe not a fine, but I thought they did something.......

You are correct, fergy. To the tune of $50k!

Did Joe Gibbs publicly apologize for Tony? I know Tony did, but did Joe?

Now that, DE, I don't remember.

Wow, Mr. Cingular executive, how is the company stock doing by the way?

Seriously, you are jumping to conclusions and going quite a bit overboard.

I wish I was Mr Cingular executive.................I only pay some of his salary!! :(

If being on probation garuntees your job for a year it isn't much of a penalty.

:cuckoo: Howdy 9999 you are correct to the highest degree! So far all that has happened is he had a 2 lap penalty and has had his job guaranteed for the rest of the year.. Hell, MY job ain't guaranteed for the rest of the year. It just ain't enough to make some of us happy.

How does being put on probation guarantee him a job?

Unless its like NASCAR's kind of probation, if he screws up again RC can fire him, sit him out, fine him, ect.

I know it might be hard for some of you to do, but you have to give a little respect to RC for doing this. How many team owners have taken the initiative to do something about one of their drivers after they have acted up?

DE,

By your reasoning Cingular wont sponsor anything involving Robby anymore, and that Robby may have trouble finding sponsors in general. By your reasoning, I would assume Kurt Busch and Tony Stewart would have the same problem right? If thats the case, then Scott Wimmer's career would have been over after the DUI. Seriously, its not at severe as you are making it out to be.

Read the whole thread.

I have...enlighten me.
Have you not read comments in this thread about Gordon being with RCR 'til at least the end of year because he's on probation?

Yes, but just because he is on probation doesn't mean he will be driving at the end of the year.

Even Childress isn't stupid enough to let RG stay at RCR the rest of the season and not drive! The biggest hypocrite in motorsports Richard may be, but even he isn't that dumb.

Careful 97, don't underestimate here.

He DID hire Harvick...and Sauter...

I don't know that RC has anyone on tap that's any better to stick in the car. We all know that contracts can be abrogated, but it just may cost too much to do so.

Well I heard that Mr. Cingular Executive told RC that if Robbie screwed up just 1 more time they were going to put him on double secret probation...

That fits right in to what NASCAR usually does...

I never said it did.

Hiring Sauter has to have been one of the more stupid moves by RCR. I watched one of the Busch races and Sauter had a "for sure" top 5 car and he drove it back to 26th place with his carelessness.
