'twas a doozy. Forecast Sunday evening called for 3-5 inches of rain with wind gusts upward to 90mph, yes 90 mph.
Storm hit shortly after midnight. The roar of the wind was unbelievable! We lost power at 3:30 am Monday along with 180,000 other households. Power restored for us last might at 7 pm. There's still 50,000 without power. Some accounts say some may not get power back until Friday, Overnight temps are forecast to be in the 30's so it's going to suck for many w/o power..

It's crazy to imagine how we just take power for granted..... and all the amenities we enjoy now for granted until they are gone...... I bitch and gripe about how much the bills are but once you are without them........ you realize how much you depend on them....

Power outages where I live are frequent. We often have to switch over to generator power. Ours is large enough to run the pump for our well water and also pellet stoves for heating. Two fridge/freezers and one chest freezer. Our entertainment system including internet. We’re all set unless we run out of fuel.

Similar setup here. I have everything essential but the fridge on battery backup, minimum 1 hour for each device (even the 50" TV and uverse box). Buys us enough time to run stuff for emergency use, if we know it will be awhile, also buys time to get the generator from the shop and run cords in.

My Go-To is the APC 1000 series, but I have a 1500 on the TV and uverse box since it draws more, plus I can daisy-chain extra batteries on if I so felt like it.

We bitch about weather sometimes in SoCal
:XXROFL:
You guys put up with some crazy crap over there. I couldn’t do it.

My meter has a connection for my generator. When the power goes out, I plug my generator into the outdoor meter feeding the entire breaker box. I only leave on the breakers that control the things that I need/want. When the power comes back on, it automatically switches back to the landline power feed through the meter.

I swear the power company that supplies my area had their wires made from paper mache. Our power seems to go out even when the sun shines too bright. Ridiculous. I don't have any other options where I live though.

Your first winter working from home full time means a reliable generator is vital I guess.

Winter..... Summer..... Spring or Fall seem to have no influence on our power interruptions but yes, a generator is vital. Mine is only 6500W I believe. Even at that, it's amazing what it will run. We've always got the RV with a built in generator as well. It'll run both A/C units along with everything else on board. We've used that in the heat of the summer several times. We also have the Honda generator that you have. That thing is also great for @ the track when you want something quieter. The one we use for our home sounds like a push mower on full throttle.

We had a craftsman 3000. Actually still do. But alot of newer electronics would not run on it's "dirty" power, and it was 20 years old (1996). With the honda 3000, we use less fuel and can run more things, including electronics. We don't have an automatic changeover box, but 85% of the time the APC units cover the break power failures.

At work, we have one of those big diesel generators for our primary backup. The servers run on APC units for the 45-60 second sit takes the generator to start and get to 1800 RPM. It came on a couple days ago and the changeover switch made a THUD so loud you could feel it. Granted we're running around 45 kVA at 280 volts......
