NASCAR - RUSTY WALLACE PAYS FINE WITH PENNIES
Rusty Wallace was fined $5000 for comments that he made in the post race interviews at Martinsville. This is how he protested to being fined for being himself. Wallace had an armored truck deliver the fine in pennies, 500,000 of them, to NASCAR at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

One of the guys at work just did the same sort of thing. A cop gave him a ticket for parking in an empty lot across the street from work. The cop said his front tire was an inch onto the sidewalk causing an impedence to people walking down the sidewalk. He gave him a $40 ticket. Steve went to the bank and got $40 in pennies. He took them back to the shop and opened all 80 rolls and put them in a heavy bag. He took them to the courthouse and paid his fine with them. They said "You can't pay your fine with open pennies". He said "I have too, I don't have time to count them myself" and he just walked out. The funny thing is, I believe they have no choice but to accept them as they are considered legal tender and protected as such by federal law. ;)

Oh ye, I remember and loved every moment that the media focused on it!

I tried paying a parking ticket in pennies once. I was told that they didn't have to accept them if they didn't want to or that I could sit there and count them out in front of her. I paid in greenbacks, but in hindsight, I wish I would have stood there and counted them out.

Rusty sent the armored car to NASCAR headquarters in Daytona Beach with those pennies.

Legally if someone refuses to accept legal tender in payment of a debt, they have no legal recourse to collect that debt. Of course courts and other government agencies can make up their own rules as they go along; people usually believe what they're told and comply instead of questioning and demanding their rights.
