Remembering a friend.

I did this pic for Garland Parker's son, Everette, a little while back and I don't think he would mind me sharing it with you. It's a combination of a pic of the model I built him and one of the last racetrack pics taken of him. Ol' Garland would be probaly be uncomfortable with the attention come to think of it even though he deserves it. He raced from back in the flathead days with Fireball Roberts and Curtis Turner all the way up to the time of his passing a couple of years ago. He drove everything from flathead coupes to the wedge cars and if you wanted to know anything about a Ford then he was the man to see. He helped me get and keep my '64 Galaxie I'm driving now on the road and I'm proud to call him friend.

He was a local driver that ran a repair shop during the week and raced on weekends in the Lancaster SC, Rock Hill SC and MonroeNC area. Like most in the fifties and sixties he would work on his racers at night with the help of friends. He had it a little better than most becase his business and race car shop was right next door to his home. He won his share in the early days but was satisfied to run in the pack in the later years and let the race car pay for itself. He was a certified "character" and if he didn't like you then you would be ignored until you got the message or had to be invited to leave. If he liked you then a better friend couldn't be found. The difference between most people and him was that you never had to guess which group you fit into. If all the Ford drivers he helped were lined end to end then it would wear out a small block Chevy and they still couldn't pass them all.
