Report: GM to cut support for Nationwide, truck teams

Well there goes the truck series or maybe it will go all Toyoda with 1 or 2 Roush's

UPDATE: General Motors is planning to cut back on its support of NASCAR teams in all of the sanctioning body's professional series. Chevy spokesman Terry Rhadigan says GM, which is reorganizing through bankruptcy, is discussing what he described as incremental cutbacks in support. He says cuts will be made soon and that the discussions are "indeed NASCAR-wide." Rhadigan would not say if one series would be affected more than others, nor would he say the size of the cuts or how much GM spends on NASCAR. The automaker, through its Chevy brand, provides cash and other support to teams including engines and parts.(Associated Press)(6-12-2009)

What we now need is for NASCAR to totally outlaw all manufacturer support and put the onus on each of the teams. Of course the teams with the most money would win out, but what do we have now? I do believe that had not Toyota come into the sport, Chevy would now say that all support is over and the series would be taken over by the Ford brand. It's a jungle out there and anything can happen. But when I look at today's NASCAR, I only see one car anyway...and it's been that way for much longer than the COT has been around. If Chevy is going to take it in the shorts, let it be and let the competition go where it may. If Chevy were to pull all of it's support, does anyone here believe that Hendricks would close up shops? Childress? DEI? I don't think for a minute that any of them would be gone, except for another brand. As my Aussie friend would say, Crikey, they are all the same anyway.

This will kill the truck series and IMHO they're the ones that are putting on the best show today.

I doubt that this will end either series. You'll probably see several teams switching to Ford or Toyota, and more than likely a few teams merging, but that's about it.

I should point out that this isn't the first time car makers have pulled support from NASCAR. Back then people said it was going to be the end of the sport too. Of course that didn't happen, and you could argue that the lack of car maker support made the racing better. It narrowed the gap between the haves and the have nots.

The teams still have engines. They'll probably just have to go back to building engines on their own without the R&D from the auto industry.

Also, this could be a huge opportunity in disguse. Since the car makers are going to be making more fuel efficent cars or alternate fuel cars, this could be a cash cow for the sport.

Just think of how awesome it would be for both Chevy and NASCAR if they came back with a 900hp electric engine and wanted to race it in the Daytona 500? Talk about winning on Sunday, selling on Monday. :D

Time to rename the Truck Series: The Camping World Toyota Tundra Series.

So....come on all you guys and gals that follow the sport, you knew this was coming, Dodge has already withrawn factory support at the Cup level and now Chevy. I'll have to agree with Foe on this one, I think the sport will become better in the long run after everything is sorted out. I also think Chevy will be back in the sport in the not too distant future.

Also, don't forget that NASCAR isn't as dependant on car maker support as other racing series like Formula 1. If the teams like Ferrari pulled out of that sport, it would kill it over night.

Not so in NASCAR. The cars aren't terribly expensive to make (roughly $250k per car last time I checked. Compare that to roughly $5 million per F1 car. Plus, sponsors cover a lot of the team costs in NASCAR. If sponsership ever left, then I'd be talking about the end of days for the sport. That's the life-blood of the modern era.

But conisdering how brand-loyal the fans are, that's very unlikely to happen. You can expect some consolidation, or even some of the weaker teams to fold, but this wont kill any of the three series. It might even make them better.

Ferrari shall not take part in the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship until the conditions of its entry are satisfied

Maranello, 12th June 2009 - Following publication of the list of entries for the 2010 Formula One World Championship, which includes Ferrari as an unconditional entrant, Ferrari wishes to state the following:

• Ferrari submitted on 29 May 2009 an entry to the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship which is subject to certain conditions. As of today, these conditions have not been met;

• notwithstanding this and despite Ferrari's previous written notice to the FIA not to do so, the FIA has included Ferrari as a unconditional participant in next year's Formula One World Championship. For the avoidance of any doubt, Ferrari reaffirms that it shall not take part in the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship under the regulations adopted by the FIA in violation of Ferrari's rights under a written agreement with the FIA.

f1 is doing quite well destroying itself without help from anyone but that's another story....

Penske bought Saturn I would guess the Chevy teams could move over to Saturns in cup anyway.

Isn't it funny the government wants us all to drive tiny (unsafe) green cars when almost all of them are being chaffered around in big a$$ limousines or they drive expensive European cars.
