From an ESPN article by Bob Pockrass (who usually gets such minutia right)...

"The team now goes into this stretch knowing it could win only what is called the owners championship. It really is a team title, and it means much more to teams than it does to the public. But the bonus money is the same to the team as it is for who wins the driver title.

Crew chief Greg Ives said the motivation for the Hendrick No. 88 team comes from wanting to run well. His team sits 15 points outside the final spot in the owner version of its Chase with two races left in the regular season."

This implies that the 31 is currently "in the chase" with twp races to go in the regular season, although Ryan Newman is currently "out." I guess that is because the 34 is "out" although Chris Buescher is "in." The 34 team is currently ranked 31st in owner points so presumably would not make the owners chase.

And Xfinity makes my head hurt, with a number of highly ranked cars that don't qualify for the drivers' chase, like the 2, 22, and 88. LOL. I wonder if all this was intended from the beginning?

This might be something that those of us who detest the silly chase should be watching . I know I will.

Did not know the owners championship had the Chase as well. I guess it makes sense. It would be awkward presenting the Chase Championship to a random driver and rhe Owners Championship to the team that actually performed best all season.

They do however count for the owners championship. At least for the 18 and the 22. LOL
