In theory at least any one of the top 3 in points can leave Richmond leading the standings. Tony and JJ have a chance to make up ground but can't overtake Sterling in this race.
If the winner Saturday is also the points leader, he'll pick up a fair amount of extra pocket money ast the leader bonus has reached a record high of around $210,000.
This race last year was not particularly kind to our contenders though.
Sterling qualified well, starting off in the third spot, tangled early with another car, managed to lead 5 laps, but only garnered a 32nd finish some 49 laps off the pace.
Jeff qualified even better, taking the pole. However on the 35th lap he found himself in the wall after having spun following contact with another car, refer to above driver if ya wonder who. Rejoined the race after repairs to finish 36th some 117 laps behind. Jeff did mange to lead 18 laps.
Mark Martin was for intents and purposes somewhere else entirely. Not a factor, Mark qualified 19th and finished 19th never finding his way to the front.
Tony Stewart started 33rd, but salvaged a 7th place finish.
Jimmie Johnson, Hmmmm, JJ wasn't there last year.
An interesting sidebar to this deal, last year sitting up on the front row right next to Jeff was none other than Rusty Wallace. Rusty pretty much dominated the race leading 276 of the 400 laps but was off at the end finishing 5th.
Ricky Rudd and Kevin Harvick had themsevles a little bash fest over the last 20 laps with Rudd proving the better basher and taking the win by under a second over Kevin. Jr and DJ finished 3rd and 4th rounding out the top 5.
Gonna be fun, I can just feel it coming!
