Right choice

There was a debate on another board about the choice that Tony Stewart made Sunday to stay behind JR. I feel Tony made the right choice. By staying put he got a second place finish and a good lead in the points. At that late stage in the game a driver in the top 5 or 6 in points is thinking championship. That has become more inportant than a win at Daga. What do you think.

I have listened to all the driver interviews (Tony-JR-The Expert Panel) and they all have a common theme.

There were not enough cars in that lead pack to mount a successful charge on JR even if Tony had wanted to do it. Ricky looked, Ryan looked, but you need a solid committment by a signifigant number of cars to pass in a restrictor plate race.

We all remember what happened when JR was shamed into trying to pass Mikey.......to the back of the group.

Half of these people at other boards dont know what they are talking about.... if I was Tony, I woulda stayed right where I was at. Forget the battles, Tony's wanting to win the war..

I think he made the right decision too. Why finish 6th or 7th (or worse) when you you've got a lock on 2nd, and that position can still help you in the points battle?

There's only one problem with this logic: I thought Tony didn't points race.

Maybe you don't understand because there's a difference between points racing and trying to win the championship.

Why do you bait so much?

What's the difference?

And who's baiting?

OK...my take on points racing is Sterlin' was doing it early.

Assuming the lead in WC Championship race with 6 races to go...ah different story.

But I heard Tony loud and clear after the race say now we can get back to trying to win races.

Ah, now that makes sense.

Thanks. :)

I don't really think thats points racing, I think that is plate racing. Do you think at any other track Tony would have even considered staying put behind JR? Any other track I would have thought Bump and Run. Do you think Joe Gibbs may have had a part in Tony staying where he was? mmmmmmmmm????

I only bring it up because of the criticism that was levied against Jr. when he suggested he didn't want to try to pass Michael Waltrip at Daytona, but was coerced into it by Tony Jr. Obviously, he's not in the points race (and wasn't then), but if he had just stayed in line behind Michael, he would have been accused of not being a real race car driver.

There's a time and a place to pass for the lead. Clearly, that's not Daytona or Talladega when you're in 2nd place and lacking substantial drafting power.

Tony did the right thing.

And Gibbs would have nailed his skin to the garage wall....lol

Pure supposition on my part.

:D So Tony said he is not a points racer. Not buying that. When you are in the top 5 or 6 in points and anly 6 or 7 races to go. And you know there is a big check and a Trophy waiiting in NY. Everybody becomes a points racer. My Opinion only.

And Tony wants that Championship....and if he wins will he stay in Cup?

SHould the IRL manage to string another season or two together like this one, popularity, and thus money, will grow by leaps and bounds. Tony might switch back to the open wheelers.

Problem with that scenario is that poplularity means more coverage, means more media, yada, yada, yada.

I think Tony would love have both the IRL and WC crown on his resume. No one has ever done that. Evne if he accomplishes that this season (a distinct possibiliy) there is another pair of trophys Tony likely has his eye on as well. The Daytona 500 and the Indy 500. So for a few years he might have to consider which series will give him hte best shot capturing both. He would not be the first, but rank among a very select few.
