Robby Gordon is a class act

I just got to watch a tape of the race. While everything did go horribly horribly wrong for Robby, they interviewed him after the race, like, last thing, and he was nothing but a perfect sportsman. He took his losses, his misfortune and took the blame along with his team. He didn't get angry or upset on air at all. I really respect that in any driver. That, and many other reasons, if ANYONE has any question as to why I like this driver, despite his uncanny knack for misfortune, this is my answer.

And his quote in my sig. Robby gets bashed a lot unreasonably and for his past a lot also.

If people would take the time and be open minded to the wide variety of skills he has, being a winner in every single series he has ever competed in, and how good he is with his fans and the media, and how down to earth he is, Im sure he would have more fans.

I agree to a point, but I have seen him bash his own team a time or two. Also some of his wine sessions about the tires and what not got under my skin.

Well I am one 3 years ago that didn't like Robby at all. Well, except for his win at Louden, I loved that. :D

But I did stay open minded and have been truly impressed with Robby. This year I have been a strong fan of his. He's slowly creeped up my list of favorites and at this point is fluctuating between 1st & second and maybe just solidly become #1

Yes I was very proud of Robby Sunday, with everything that happened he still tried as hard as he could and got the best finish possible under the circumstances.

who hasn't complained about tires at one point or another? Besides, Robby's team screwed up just about as bad as I've ever seen a team screw up (except the A's in the 1988 World Series) and he didn't bash them at all. Perhaps some people will get fired, but when people don't do their job well, there is no reason to keep them around...especially in a performance based industry.

I would not even have wanted to see happan to the 17 last year.....as much as i dislike roush thats still to much in one day....

A few years back I would have put Robby in the same category as Sauter or Bodine. He seems to have turned himself around and is becoming a better person. Whether or not that translates into a better driver is yet to be seen. I have to wonder if his time spent with Killian had anything to do with his transformation...

Robby has definitly become a more respectable racer in my opinion.

I mirror what a lot of people are saying here...he's quit complaining a bit, but still has a great edge that makes him fun to watch and listen to in interviews.

Anybody who can have a day like Sunday and still give a respectable interview and own up to some of the problems is 'ok' in my book. I doubt he'll ever be my favorite, but he's definitly moving up on my list.

One of my teachers was at the Coke 600 and he said when they got over the PA and said "now entering the track in his hellocopter from Indy Robby Gordon" he said everyone in the place start to boo........i would have got kicked out cause i stand up for my driver........and yes i did boo jr at dega and got some funny looks.

count me among the former robby-dislikers...i used to hate seeing him get into a cup car, but he's certainly not just a menace like he used to be.

i think it was sears point a couple years ago that he made me sit up and take notice...i've liked him ever since.

Funny,I didn't see Robby congratulate Jeff Gordon on a dominating win.Jaime McMurray congratulated Jeff, now that's class, much like Bobby Labonte congratulating Jeff on the win at California earlier this year IMHO.
I still don't care for Robby Gordon,I was actually laughing hard as each tire came rolling off the #31,much the same reaction I'm sure that many fans had when Jeff Gordon's engine blew at Michigan, after He'd already led teh most laps in that race and was leading just before that DNF. ;)
Jeff Gordon is the road course King btw,He left no doubts Sunday after leading an event record 92 laps. enroute to His 8th road course victory, that's without any car coling either. :p

I guess the keywords are, " You didn't see" But just cause you didn't see, doesn't mean it didn't happen.

So exactly what is it you'd like? Sit Jeff up on a thron in VC and watch all the competitors stream by one by one and congratulate him so "You" can see?

Nevermind, didn't mean to upset the Robby love-in thread.
I still don't care for Robby, not Everybody's gonna like the same drivers, for many and varied reasons, fans are individuals with many different tastes and etc. ;)
I should have known better than to post in the first place as My opinion differs from others in this thread, thought it was about discusiing viewpoints and etc.,perhaps I was wrong. ;)

Funny, I didnt see Jeff Gordon congratulate Robby on his win at Sonoma last year either. All he did was whine and complain. I dont consider that a class act at all. He literally went on about Robby passing coming to the yellow for the rest of the season, when the move Robby pulled was completely legal.

Im not directing this exactly to you 24thunder, you know we cool, just making it known as a fact.

Jeff Gordon's problem is he holds a grudge. To me, he's like a little kid. Im sure he still sulking over that New Hampshire loss in 2001. Before that race, Robby and Jeff never had an encounter. When Robby did the bump and run on Jeff, I was happy, both because no one has had the balls to do that to Jeff, and it showed that much more that Jeff is a hypocrite. It was wrong that Robby did the bump and run on him, but its perfectly legal that he did the bump and run on Rusty at Bristol and countless of other places. Give me a break.

You may have hit on something there. They could put up a throne and the other drivers could file by and kiss Jeff's ring in VC. What was it Bret Hart used to say. He's the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be... ;)

I disagree.

Good grief, children!!!!! Don't let what started out as a
great Robby thread turn into something to fight over.
Not ALL the drivers can take the time to go to Victory
Circle and congratulate all the winners, all the time.
I used to not care for Robby, but that has turned to
respect in the last year, especially.
Let it go. Robby had a nightmarish day, Sunday, and
I feel sorry for him. And he handeled it pretty dam well, in spite
of the tires coming off his car.
Sooooooooo, kids, why don't we just chill, and if ya don't like a driver,
ya don't have to post about him.

Fair enough RobbyG Fan,it's mainly a matter of persepective afterall. :D
I will say that Robby took those mishaps a lot better then T.Stewart would have IMHO,it would have been very dangerous on the track if the #20 car had that many problems. OK #20 fans let Me have it. ;)

There U go. j/k :D

I wish I could say that i laugh when bad things happen to drivers...but then again, I think being a "fan" of NASCAR kind of means that I'm somewhat of a fan of all of the drivers. That might just be me...but I hate to see anyone have a day go up in smoke so fast...

odd like jeff gordon's motor blowing? I didn't laugh at that, I guess I just feel deeply for someone when something bad happens to them

That's a great attitude.I guess I get biased by the number of cheers whenever Jeff Gordon has problems on raceday. ;) Not all fans are like that,I know.
I don't really recall any other drivers ever having that many problems in one event, although the cut airhose was the team's own doing.

true about the airhose...but once the day is shot to hell, you might as well go in a handbasket...right?

right.Robby did seem to take that miserable day with grace though.Cheers.

I think many people still think of Robby the way he was a few years ago. I don't think there's a person in the sport that's matured or become a better sport than Robby has the last couple of years. When he had his own team a few years ago, I couldn't stand him, but RCR has sure been good for him.  and I'm not an RCR fan..... well if he keeps Dave Blaney too I guess I could be. :D

It's all about RESPECT, for one's self and others. Robby has sure earned MY respect since his whining time a few years ago!

Yes, he is NOW a class act, and I hope he remains that way!

So what happened to Robby at Sonoma? Loose wheels: #31-Robby Gordon said his tire problems last weekend at Infineon Raceway were because the team forgot to tighten the lug nuts on all four tires before the race. Gordon said that all four tires nearly came off, wearing the studs off the hubs. He said that ground the sway bar off the car, later popping the left front and right front tires. Gordon had three front tires go down during that race and finished 34th. He has won the previous two Cup road races.(Roanoke Times)(7-3-2004)

Yep,Robby Gordon swept the road course events in 2003.
Jeff Gordon swept those events in 1998 and 1999. :D
