Rabat-Agadir – 1/3/2005 Robby Gordon is off to a fast start on the Dakar Rally.

Robby Gordon, who last Friday became the first American to win a stage of the Dakar Rally, has moved back into the overall lead of the renowned marathon run through the deserts of North Africa after scoring his second stage win in the 76-mile Rabat-Agadir special stage in the fastest time with his works VW Touareg.

Gordon, a rookie in the event but a veteran off-road racing competitor back home, assumed the lead from Nissan driver Colin McRae, who finished 11th in this stage after a poor run across the first of the major African stages. The Scot was 3m47s off the pace of the leader and now lies 10th overall behind all three of his Nissan teammates.

Former motorcycle ace Stephane Peterhansel is second overall for Mitsubishi, nearly a minute behind Gordon but ahead of the second VW of Bruno Saby, who was also third fastest on the stage, ahead of Luc Alphand and Jutta Kleinschmidt.

Tuesday’s stage will see the competitors head from Agadir to Smara as they tackle the longest special stage of the rally so far – 236 miles.
