New Year cracker lit by Volkswagen newcomer Robby Gordon during the Dakar Rally: The US-American won the opening six kilometre stage of the desert classic, which was held on the beach at Castelldefels 20 kilometres south of Barcelona, in the Volkswagen Race-Touareg.

For the Race-Touareg, which celebrated its premiere exactly one year ago, success in the curtain-raiser meant the eighth stage victory in total. Robby Gordon's team colleagues also successfully mastered the beach stage: The Frenchman Bruno Saby occupied fourth place on the first stage, Jutta Kleinschmidt from Germany was sixth and the Finn Juha Kankkunen came home in 13th position.

After 3 stages Robby is in 2nd place - 1 second out of the lead.

Just staaaay over there Robby and put folks we can't pronounce the names of in the wall!

Robby(rubby)Gordon can beat the clock, perhaps He should stay in that Series as He's found His niche now.Let the big boys race without worrying about what rubby's doing all the time in the Cup Series. :D

just because robby didnt do so well this year doesn mean he shouldnt be in cup, i think if he gets this team started and everything that he'll be a top contender.

You're not the only one that feels that way,but there are many of Us that feel differently, don't have to always agree. :)

Naaa He's done in the cup. Too many folks sittin atound with black ball in their hand just waitin for him to try to start up. Factory backing will not be an option he will have.. He needs to stay where he is not so well known and he might make a name over there that he cannot make here. Stay Robbie, stay!
Betsy ;) ;)

Special Message from the US Embassy in Morocco

Hi Robby

Such a pleasure to talk to you by phone. I mentioned our discussion in a staff meeting we had the next morning here at the Embassy and everyone began following your progress even more closely. We were so excited by your early stage victories and now so disappointed for you in your unfortunate crash. I saw some of the pictures on the web. Must have been pretty scary. I also saw your comments and your optimism to continue the race, and maybe pick up a little bit of time each day. I think this is what makes Americans such special people. The early pilgrims could easily have packed it up and headed back to England after their first miserable winter. And it would have been completely understandable for "Flash" Gordon to drop out and head back to his family and a warm bed after his horrendous crash. But they didn't and you didn't. Thank you for coming to this part of the world and showing people another glimpse of what it means to be an American.

Congratulations, best of luck, and keep in touch.

Stage Six Updates
Quotes from Robby Gordon
"First of all Dirk and I are ok. I cut my hand on the windshield a little but it's no big deal. We started ninth and we got up to 2nd on the road. Colin and I were first and second when we wrecked minutes apart. The crash was big. We are lucky the truck turned sideways early in the crash the way it did. I think we probably barrel rolled five or six times. We were going in excess of 100mph. We got the Touareg back running and we got stuck. We then had trouble with the clutch and had to get towed in which put us around six hours down. The guys are working on the truck right now and we will be back out tommorow as good as new. This race is still not over. There are ten stages left and if we can gain a half hour every stage we can still show well. We are not giving up. I'm certain we have stage wins left in us. Tommorow is a new day."

Maybe he wrecked from lack of ABILITY! I wish he would do better so maybe he can find a home.
Betsy

Betsy.... maybe your posts reflect your lack of ability to think before engaging mouth.

I'd say Colin McRea has plenty of ability, but he wrecked bad and is in the hospital.

Wolfsburg (6th January 2005). Yet another world class performance by Volkswagen works driver Jutta Kleinschmidt: The speedy Germany lady and her Italian co-driver Fabrizia Pons tightened their grip on third place overall during the seventh and, at the same time, the Dakar Rally’s most difficult and, at 660 kilometres, longest stage. The female duo reached the finish of the so-called marathon-stage in Mauritania as third best team. No service work is permitted at the end of the desert stage between Zouerat and Tichit – the Race-Touareg, powered by a 260 PS 2.5-litre five-cylinder diesel TDI engine, was parked in Parc fermé along with all the other vehicles ready to attack the second part of the marathon-stage held over 520 kilometres to Tidjikja on Friday. Team colleague Bruno Saby and co-driver Michel Périn, who started the seventh stage as leaders, fell down the order for, as yet unknown reasons, just as Juha Kankkunen and his co-driver Juha Repo did. Robby Gordon continued the rally on Thursday after a fantastic team effort: The Volkswagen team repaired the US-American’s Race-Touareg overnight after he rolled the previous afternoon and had only arrived at the finish around midnight towed by a Volkswagen Race-Truck. Gordon and co-driver Dirk von Zitzewitz were on their way again at 12:40 P.M. – they started from 115th position and had worked their way up to twelve place already at the first check point on the stage.

Eagle1 maybe your posts reflect the lack of ability to read! I am posting in English and not referring to you in any manner whatsoever. I have a certain opinion about this driver and I do not mind to share that opinion. If your opinion is other than mine please share it with all here. But please when it comes to personal attacks use them on someone that you might best.

Moved from 115th place to 12th place after one stage. Yeah, real lack of ability there.

ya, and maybe every wreck you driver was in even if it was not his falght, still your driver has a lack of ABILITY to.

Naaa! My driver is Jeffey. And he may not be the King, but he is at least a Prince.
Also, I too, wish Robbie well. I want him to stay over there.
Betsy

As I said earlier, its surprising to me how Betsy hasnt been banned.

Betsy = troll.

Howdy RGF You don't seem to be adding a whole bunch to the thread. It is not about Betsy, or who you like or dislike! It is about one of my most unfavorite drivers. I freely post my opinion about him, and I think you should also.

RobbyGFan = uneducated

Betsy, I would never try to best you. My mother taught me along time ago that it is fruitless to try and best certain types of people because even if you did, they wouldn't have a clue.

You dont get it. Are you 8 years old?

In every single thread concerning a driver you dont like you have to talk mad isht, trying to create a stir and rile people up. We get the point after you post 100 times on the subject, if you post once in a thread no need to continue repeating the same crap over again in the same thread. And Im uneducated? :XXROFL:

Youre a troll, plain and simple, and trolls arent needed on message board communities like these.

Lappy.... ask and ye shall recieve. LOL

Stage Seven: Quantum Leap in the Overall Standings

Wolfsburg (7th January 2005). Yet another world class performance by Volkswagen works driver Jutta Kleinschmidt: The speedy German lady and her Italian co-driver Fabrizia Pons tightened their grip on third place overall during the Dakar Rally’s seventh stage. On the 660 kilometre long and, at the same time most gruelling stage, the female duo reached the finish of the so-called marathon-stage from Zouerat to Tichit in Mauritania as third best team. The second part of the marathon-stage to Tidjikja was cancelled on Friday morning to allow the competitors to regroup after numerous cars, motorbikes and trucks had still not reached the finish on Friday morning. Bruno Saby and co-driver Michel Périn, who started the seventh stage in their Volkswagen Race-Touareg as leaders, initially damaged the front end over a jump. After 200 kilometres the French team got bogged down in a treacherous camel-grass section. Saby/Périn finally reached the stage finish in 14th position and now line up tenth overall. Robby Gordon and Dirk von Zitzewitz, who had started 115th after the accident the day before yesterday and only reached the finish around midnight after a twelve hour drive, followed their colleague’s home in 15th position on this gruelling stage. Juha Kankkunen and co-driver Juha Repo, who damaged a driveshaft and the suspension on a rock after 70 kilometres on Thursday, were nevertheless able to continue after a time consuming repair and reached the marathon bivouac in Tichit 24 hours later.

Kris Nissen (Volkswagen Motorsport Director)
"Jutta and Fabrizia drove faultlessly on this gruelling stage. My sincere congratulations also go to the team that made Robby Gordon’s car driveable again during the night. Even more regrettable is that Bruno, who was leading, also suffered a setback just as Juha did.”

#310 – Jutta Kleinschmidt (D), 3rd place (leg) / 3rd position overall
"Quite honestly I’m relieved that we survived the day in such good condition. Every aspect of that stage was incredibly tough. The strong headwind and bad visibility in the sand storm demanded every ounce of concentration. The camel grass at the end was an unpleasant obstacle after the very tricky dunes.”

#307 – Bruno Saby (F), 14th place (leg) / 10th position overall
"Although we were really unlucky, despite the terrible conditions we still reached the finish of this punishing stage in the dark in 14th position. Unfortunately we damaged the front end on a jump and got bogged down once.”

#317 – Robby Gordon (USA), 15th place (leg) / 26th position overall
"During my fight back I got stuck in the dunes and had to change two tyres. We drove seven hours in total darkness. I’m getting to know the real character of the ‘Dakar’ here in Mauritania. I’m really very impressed.”

I don't think that this was necessary, and quite inappropriate.

In fact, I find this whole "discussion" distasteful. How it descended into name-calling and personal attacks, is beyond me.

It is supposed to be up-dates on an American driver's progress in one of the most challenging races in the world. There are those of us who would like to keep up with Robby's progress.

If you don't like Robby, fine. Don't bother reading this thread or posting in it.
