Wolfsburg (7th January 2005). Yet another world class performance by Volkswagen works driver Jutta Kleinschmidt: The speedy German lady and her Italian co-driver Fabrizia Pons tightened their grip on third place overall during the Dakar Rally’s seventh stage. On the 660 kilometre long and, at the same time most gruelling stage, the female duo reached the finish of the so-called marathon-stage from Zouerat to Tichit in Mauritania as third best team. The second part of the marathon-stage to Tidjikja was cancelled on Friday morning to allow the competitors to regroup after numerous cars, motorbikes and trucks had still not reached the finish on Friday morning. Bruno Saby and co-driver Michel Périn, who started the seventh stage in their Volkswagen Race-Touareg as leaders, initially damaged the front end over a jump. After 200 kilometres the French team got bogged down in a treacherous camel-grass section. Saby/Périn finally reached the stage finish in 14th position and now line up tenth overall. Robby Gordon and Dirk von Zitzewitz, who had started 115th after the accident the day before yesterday and only reached the finish around midnight after a twelve hour drive, followed their colleague’s home in 15th position on this gruelling stage. Juha Kankkunen and co-driver Juha Repo, who damaged a driveshaft and the suspension on a rock after 70 kilometres on Thursday, were nevertheless able to continue after a time consuming repair and reached the marathon bivouac in Tichit 24 hours later.
Kris Nissen (Volkswagen Motorsport Director)
"Jutta and Fabrizia drove faultlessly on this gruelling stage. My sincere congratulations also go to the team that made Robby Gordon’s car driveable again during the night. Even more regrettable is that Bruno, who was leading, also suffered a setback just as Juha did.”
#310 – Jutta Kleinschmidt (D), 3rd place (leg) / 3rd position overall
"Quite honestly I’m relieved that we survived the day in such good condition. Every aspect of that stage was incredibly tough. The strong headwind and bad visibility in the sand storm demanded every ounce of concentration. The camel grass at the end was an unpleasant obstacle after the very tricky dunes.”
#307 – Bruno Saby (F), 14th place (leg) / 10th position overall
"Although we were really unlucky, despite the terrible conditions we still reached the finish of this punishing stage in the dark in 14th position. Unfortunately we damaged the front end on a jump and got bogged down once.”
#317 – Robby Gordon (USA), 15th place (leg) / 26th position overall
"During my fight back I got stuck in the dunes and had to change two tyres. We drove seven hours in total darkness. I’m getting to know the real character of the ‘Dakar’ here in Mauritania. I’m really very impressed.”
