Robby Gordon’s Red Bull Chevy on Toyo Tires Dominates 2006 Baja 1000

Robby Gordon’s Red Bull Chevy on Toyo Tires

Dominates 2006 Baja 1000

La Paz, Mexico (Nov. 17, 2006) – Robby Gordon and Andy McMillin turned in a virtually perfect performance over a nearly 19-and-a-half-hour time span in dominating the 39th Baja 1000 in their Red Bull Chevrolet CK1500.

The victory is Gordon’s third Baja 1000 win, while this marks the 19-year-old McMillin’s first win in the granddaddy of all off-road races. It was the first Baja 1000 victory for one of Gordon’s primary sponsors, Toyo Tires, who knocked BFGoodrich from its 21-year rein as the overall winner of one of racing’s premier events.

“We had a flawless run,” said Gordon upon his arrival in Miami, Fla., at 9 a.m. Friday for this weekend’s season-ending NASCAR Nextel Cup Series race. “We had absolutely no issues and I’m really happy that Andy was able to get his first win with us, and I’m pumped that we got a win on Toyo Tires.”

Gordon, who started 31st in the field of 36 Trophy Trucks, the race’s premier class, drove the first 725 miles of the 1,050.83-mile course before giving way to McMillin. Gordon took the overall lead on adjusted time after approximately 450 miles and had passed every four-wheeled vehicle in the field at approximately 600 miles. Nearly 450 cars, trucks, motorcycles and quads started the race.

Gordon’s navigator was Andy Grider, the former motorcycle champion who will also navigate for Gordon in January’s Dakar Rally. McMillin was assisted by long-time Gordon navigator Gregg Till.

“We could barely see out the front window to the nose of the truck for the first eight hours because of all the dust,” Gordon said. “We started so deep in the field that we were basically driving blind until we got out in front. It was just a great run for us.”

While official results are not yet available, it appears Gordon’s Red Bull-sponsored Trophy Truck crossed the line as the first four-wheeled vehicle overall, followed by the class-1 car of Larry Roeseler and Troy Herbst and then the Trophy Truck of B.J. Baldwin.

The Trophy Trucks are unlimited production full-sized pickups sporting more than 800 horsepower.

Gordon’s race started Thursday at 10:45 a.m. (PST) in Ensenada, Mexico, approximately 65 miles south of San Diego, and ended Friday morning with McMillin behind the wheel in La Paz at the southern end of the Baja California peninsula.

A one-hour race recap will be shown on NBC Sports Dec. 10 at 2:30 p.m. EST.

"One of racing's ultimate racers" to quote SPEED.

I'm not gonna disagree with that, but I'm glad they said "one of".

CONGRATULATIONS ROBBY AND THE WHOLE TEAM! BEST WISHES FOR DAKKAR!:bounce: :whoopee: :pbjtime:

Let's do this: Give Stewart and Robby a tri-athlon of dirt races (with locals thrown in to have a worthwhile field): 50 Laps at eldora, 20 laps at a figure 8, and a desert run in trophy trucks across arizona and new mexico.

A figure 8?

Now that would be a funny race to watch! Neither would give an inch on a figure 8. There would be a crash for all to remember.. Then the other two races would prolly be one for one.. So a tie is what I can see from here.
Betsy

After what robby did in busch at watkins, i can imagine the inches he'd be looking for in a figure 8.

As for a tie, give them some apshalt racing. They both have run in IRL, both in cup, both are supurb road course guys, i think motorcycles are the only pavement machines they DON'T know how to race. The 2 of them are just that skilled.

I bet they both know how to race motorcycles!
How about Bogging, Semi, Monster Trucks, Dragsters, or even head to head on PINKS?

Ahhh,;) Robby started out his racing career racing motorcycles, motocross & dirt, not sure about the asphalt but I sure wouldn't rule it out. LOL:beerbang:

you mean "you" knew

NO, she meant "WE" knew as in the many fans and people that have a clue of the natural ability and many accomplishments of this great all around driver. People that have a clue that NASCAR is NOT the know-all, be-all of motorsports, but see him as one of the most totally accomplished all around racers of many different racing curiculumns (sp).

Off-road racing
Robby, the son of off-road legend "Baja Bob" Gordon, started out competing in off road racing. He won 5 consecutive SCORE International off-road class championships from 1986-1990 and a sixth championship in 1996. Gordon also won two championships in the Mickey Thompson stadium series and in three Baja 1000’s in 1987 1989 and 2006.
Gordon has continued off-road racing throughout his career in Champ Car and NASCAR. As of 2006, he currently fields a team in SCORE, where he is a part time driver. In 2005 Gordon took part in the famous 16 day Dakar Rally, driving for the Red Bull sponsored Volkswagen team. He became the first American in the history of the rally to win a stage in the car division. He won two stages in total and a 12th place division finish. Gordon also won the 2005 Baja 500 covering the 419-mile course in 9 hours, 10 minutes, 32 seconds. In 2006, Gordon took part in the Dakar Rally in a Hummer H3. Team Dakar USA did well until stage 9, when a damaged radiator caused late arrival at Atar, Mauritania, and subsequent disqualification.

IMSA
In 1990, Gordon began racing sports cars. He won races in both Trans-Am and IMSA, where he had four consecutive class wins in the 24 Hours of Daytona from 1990-1994, and three consecutive 12 Hours of Sebring class wins.

Open Wheel
Gordon’s first start in the CART IndyCar series (now Champ Car) came in 1992. His first full season and Indy 500 start would come in 1993. He raced for Derrick Walker from 1994–96, for whom he captured his two career wins. For 1998 and 1999, Gordon fielded his own team in the series with little success. Gordon raced 10 times in the Indy 500 from 1993 to 2004 fielding his own team in 1999, 2000 and 2004. He, along with John Andretti and Tony Stewart, are the only three drivers to race in the Coca-Cola 600 and Indy 500 in the same day. In 1999, Gordon came within one lap of winning. He inherited the lead by virtue of not stopping for a final pit stop and tried to conserve enough fuel to last until the end of the race. He ran out on lap 199 (of 200) and had to give up the lead to Sweden's Kenny Brack.

As low as 3 wins may seem to the many detractors, it is still more wins than several drivers with 14 or more years in the series that have had the opportunity to drive top notch equipment, which Robby has not, at that time, RCR was NOT a top tier team.

Thanks for posting that!

But we know the Jeff fans cant accept Robbys 1st win, since he knocked Jeff out of the way to win that one!

ROTFL, Lappy!!!!! I'm a 'Jeffie' fan!! And I do like Robby as well. Funny, but 'racin' deals are just that. May the best driver win!!!!! I harbor no ill will for Robby for that move. :) :p
