Rockingham To Host Hooters Pro Cup Season Finale
ROCKINGHAM, N.C.-- Rockingham Speedway, the grassroots, 1-mile track that received new life last month when it was purchased by Andy Hillenburg, will host the 2008 season finale for the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series, speedway President Andy Hillenburg announced this past Saturday.
"We're happy that Andy was able to purchase Rockingham," said Gene Cox, USAR President. "He's a racer at heart, and it's good to see him bring the track back to life. It is the perfect venue for us to end our season on. Over the years, Rockingham was a place that many drivers clinched a championship, so it was only fitting for us to crown our 2008 Hooters Pro Cup Champion at such a storied facility."
Scheduled for Nov. 1, the 200-lap race will be known as the American 200. Hillenburg selected that name for the only Hooters Pro Cup event on a 1-mile track due to the speedway's former fall NASCAR Grand National [NEXTEL Cup] event being tagged the American 500 when the track opened in 1965.
"With this being the final race of the season, we will crown a champion in a brilliant race series," Hillenburg said about the first-ever Hooters Pro Cup event scheduled for the speedway. "We are ecstatic that it is the final race of their season."
The American 200 is the second major race scheduled for Rockingham in 2008. The speedway, which held its last race in February 2004, will return to active duty in May with the Carolina 500 ARCA race. The longest ARCA race on the schedule is slated for May 4.
