Rolex 24 At Daytona to Feature “Who’s Who” of Worldwide Auto Racing Champions and Race Winners

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (January 18, 2005) -- Drivers representing more than 100 championships and dozens of future Hall of Famers have been entered in the 43rd Rolex 24 At Daytona at Daytona International Speedway, February 3-6, as Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series officials today announced a 62-car entry list for the twice-around-the-clock race.

The 2005 Rolex 24 field boasts a Rolex Series-record 29 Daytona Prototypes and 33 GT machines. The entry list features its regular complement of top sports car racers from all over the globe, as well as five NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series champions representing six NEXTEL Cup titles, the past three Champ Car World Series champions, two Indy Racing League IndyCar Series champions and the reigning Indianapolis 500 winner.

The list is too long to post but "PLEASE" take a look as it is almost unbelievable the quantity and quality of drivers. The press release states 9 Nascar drivers but I believe there may be as many as 11 or 12. If you can't find a team to cheer for in this one, ya got problems.

NEWMAN TEAM SET TO RETURN WITH PAIR OF CHAMP CAR CHAMPIONS

After the No. 79 Newman Racing/Silverstone Racing Ford Crawford driven by Oscar-winner Paul Newman caught fire following a spin during Daytona Test Days on January 8, some may have questioned whether or not the team would return for the Rolex 24 At Daytona.

Not only is the team returning, it's bringing in a pair of ringers to share the car with Newman and Michael Brockman. Cristiano da Matta, the 2002 Champ Car World Series champion, will be making his return to North American racing after spending 2003 and 2004 in Formula One. Da Matta drove for the Newman/Haas Racing Champ Car team that Newman co-owns with Carl Haas during his championship-winning 2002 campaign.

The fourth member of the team will also be a Newman/Haas Champ Car champion, as 2004 titlist Sebastien Bourdais has also joined the fray. Bourdais got in a handful of test laps in a Howard-Boss Motorsports Pontiac Crawford during Daytona Test Days after the fire on the No. 79 car, and is no stranger to 24-hour races with a victory in the 24 Hours of Spa in 2002 and the fact that he was born in Le Mans, France.

WOW!!!! That is an impressive list. I can hardley wait for the race!
ooks like the #79 has shaken off the trauma of the fire, and Paul probaby won't quit until he is racing in Heaven!

It sure is an unbelievable list. Just hope that the TV coverage will concentrate on performance and not just big names.
