* Roof Hatch: NASCAR is developing a roof escape hatch similar to those on drag racing Funny Cars. Larger drivers like Michael Waltrip, Jimmy Spencer and Dale Jarrett worry about escaping through driver's-side window openings in a hurry. Research is ongoing at NASCAR's new R&D Center near Charlotte.(Daily Press)(1-24-2003)
 
If it's feasable and can be implemented, go for it. Never hurts to have another exit.
 
How big would it have to be for Jimmy Spencer to fit through it?
 
Won't work very well if the car's on it's roof such as once when Mikey's car was upside down and he had a heck of a time getting out of the car. I do think it's a good idea though. I know the drivers biggest fear is fire and they hate the thought of getting caught in the car when it's on fire. Maybe they could put in an ejection seat of some sort. Sounds like a goofy idea, but there could be some merit to this idea, but lots of work would have to be done to prevent the driver from coming down in the middle of the track! :D
 
Best bet for now is to develop this hatch. Cars ending up on their lids happen once maybe twice during the season. A hatch would come in handy for when a car is turned around with the drivers side against the wall. In addition NASCAR needs to get up off it arse and along with the roof hatch position the driver and his seat towards the center of the cabin.
 
But they have to find a way to keep it from coming off during a wreck or race
 
I'm sure they will find a way. They keep the hoods on with those teather (sp) things or something I think.

At least we know their doing something for the safety of their drivers
 
They just need to work on the carbon monxide(sp) poising. Aint that what got Rick Mast.
 
well now that i think about it......................in a wreak if the car hits the wall or gets in a wreak that damages the top of the car the hatch could get stuck or bent where it will not open :(
 
Yeah, I guess it's possible that the roof hatch could get stuck or bent in a wreck, but anything that gives the driver another option for getting out of a car that's on fire or wedged against the wall sounds good to me.
 
I think it is good that Nascar is attempting to make racing safer for the drivers.

I did not realize that Jarret was considered a larger driver, I knew Michael was big and Spencer, that's just obvious, but I really didn't think that Jarret was that big. Learn something everyday.
 
Great idea.....the more safety built in these machines, the better!
 
Jarrett has commented before about having a hard time exiting the car, legs are too dang long. I think that is the same problem that Mikey has. Bobby Hamilton Jr on the other hand would need a hydrolic jack to lift him to the roof hatch in the event he needed to use it. Or maybe an eject button!

Should make it easier for Sterling to get out and do some bodywork too.:D
 
That is gonna go down in history dee,If anyone else ever does it they will say that they are pulling a sterling.:)

You are right.
He just cracks me up every time he does an interview. He makes it so easy for people to pick on him. He's one of my favorites because he is just so dang funny.
