Does she have a chance? This is the first time that we've had a ROTY battle since 2009.

Kind of an interesting rookie stat..... Only once in the last seven years has a rookie finished better than 20th in the standings — Denny Hamlin finished third with three wins as a rookie in 2006. He was the last rookie to win during his first season.

Where do you think this years ROTY class will end up in the points?

I'm guessing Danica will finish 27th.

I'm guessing Ricky will finish 15th giving him the ROTY title.

Good story on the 2013 ROTY title chase here.

Sounds so much more professional when you say it . I'm thinkin Ricky 18th and Danica 27th .

Anyone have any real opinions or predictions on where they'll finish this season?

As much as I like Danica, I would be surprised to see her in the top twenty five. Stenhouse will finish top fifteen and maybe even make the chase. Hamlin finished in the top five his first year and so did Stewart. I think Ricky has the talent and equipment to do as well.

Well... I know Danica likes his equipment better than hers....

In truth, Danica could beat Ricky. If Stenhouse doesn't control his need for speed, he may wreck a dozen times or more. I'm not saying total wrecks, but the kind that slow the car way down.

So my honest prediction is Danica finishes 24th in points, and Ricky finishes 25th but still takes RoTY based on his best 17.

Since the ROTY is based on a sampling of best finishes and not the entire season, I would agree with FB's assessment.

Danica may surprise some folks with some decent finishes - a win is not out of the question for her - but I think that Stenhouse is more likely to win the award that Miss Thang. I would not be surprised to see him in Victory Lane in 2013. I would be really surprised if Danica wins in CUP this year.

If I'm thinking clearly, don't veteran drivers have some say in ROY, also? Or a driver rep? Seems as if I heard something about that.
But then, maybe I'm just having brain fade. Which is possible. :D

Based upon the best 17 races finishes(by rookie points);

One point awarded for attempting to make the race;

10 points to highest finishing rookie,
9 points for the next highest, down
to one point for the tenth finishing rookie;

Any top 10 finish by a rookie is awarded specific points based on finish, 10 for first 9 for second, down to 1 for a 10th place finish.

Bonus points are awarded four times during a season. After the 10th(California), 20th(Pocono), 30th(Lowes) the final race(Atlanta - based on final Cup points standings) of the season as follows: 10pts to the rookie who earned the most Winston Cup points in the current 10-race segment(third segmant was 9 races), the points incrementally decrease by one point until one bonus point is awarded the tenth highest rookie who earned the most points in the segment;

The second part of this system is determined by a Raybestos Rookie of the Year panel which includes, NASCAR's President, Director of Operations, Winston Cup Series Director, Winston Cup Manager of Communications, and the defending Winston Cup Champion. During the final race weekend of the season the panel meets to discuss the Raybestos Rookie of the Year candidates and grades them on three criteria. The criteria includes: driver conduct with officials in the garage and pit areas, driver conduct and awareness on the track, and personal appearance and relationship with the media. The panel then votes on each candidate in all three areas using the 10-to-1 points system. Total points will be averaged by each panel member and added to the entry, competition and bonus points of each rookie candidate after the final race of the season. The total of these points will determine the overall Raybestos NASCAR Winston Cup Rookie of the Year.

I knew there was some sort of voting.

I think she could pull off a road course win?

N'wide and CUP road course races are different. But RC races are shorter races so that could possibly help her.

I think that the demands of 500 mile races will take a toll on her. As well as 500 lap races at Bristol. I still wonder whether a 100 pound person (male or female) can have the fortitude and the strength to remain competitive over the course of a 36 race regular season races. And this is taking into account that the drivers all have power steering and air conditioning. There is no way that she would have been able to hold her own in the olden days of NASCAR.

I see her having the best chance to win on wide open tracks like Michigan and Fontucky where there is less contact in general and less side-by-side competition.

Yes, but I couldn't find an updated rule. If someone can, please do.
Man, wouldn't the rule book be a great source to go get that answer from? :rolleyes: We'll probably never know the answer to that.

Best info that I could find was this.

Rookie Points System

Main Rookie Points

Rookie of the year candidates earn points for their best seventeen (Sprint Cup), sixteen (Nationwide), or fourteen (Camping World Truck) races of the season. All other points are based on a ten-to-one system.
  1. The highest finishing rookie earns ten points, the second highest finishing rookie earns nine points, etc.
  2. One point is granted to all rookies who enter an event prior to the entry deadline, regardless of finishing position or even if they don't qualify. All rookies with teams that enter past the regular entry deadline ("post entry") do not receive this point.
Rookie Bonus Points

Bonus points are also awarded to drivers in the following circumstances:
  1. A rookie candidate finishes in the top ten in a race. If that candidate wins, he/she earns ten bonus rookie points. If that candidate finishes second, he/she earns nine bonus rookie points, etc.
  2. "Segment Bonus Points." The season is divided into three segments, the first segment being after the first ten races of the season, the second segment being after the second ten races of the season, and the third segment being the rest of the schedule. The candidate with the most championship points in each segment earns ten bonus rookie points, the candidate with the second-most championship points earns nine, etc. The system is different slightly in the Craftsman Truck Series because only 25 races, compared to the other two series, are run in their season.
  3. The rookie driver who finishes highest in the championship standings at season's end will receive an additional ten bonus rookie points.
Panel

There is a five-member panel composed of the preceding year's Series Champion, officials, etc. that meet during the final week of the season. They evaluate that year's candidates on the following criteria:
  1. Conduct with officials
  2. Conduct and awareness on the racetrack
  3. Personal appearance and conduct with the media
The panel may penalize rookies for any conduct that may be detrimental to NASCAR.

Danica- 14th
Tricky Dicky- 29th

She was lucky to finish in 10th in nationwide with the welfare system. She has no chance of finishing 14th in cup
Is the welfare points system the one that gives 43 points to the first place car down to 1 point for the last place car ?I hate that too.o_O:confused:

The welfare system in the nationwide series is the one where they don't count the Cup drivers points in the overall standings, if they did she would have finished a few spots lower then 10th.

That welfare system worked. Cup drivers aren't running entire Nationwide seasons anymore to win the easy championship.

I am going to go out on a limb(not really) and say that after her 5 race cushion to start the year is up, Danica Patrick is going to have to qualify on time for most, if not for the remainder, of the season.

The top 35 rule is gone. Still, I agree on principle. It's not unrealistic to think she might DNQ for some races. She's not a good driver and that's all there is to it.

Her one saving grace will be that she will be qualifying in Hendrick cars for all intents and purposes. It will be hard to DNQ in a Hendrick car no matter who the driver is.

You know, I want Danica to do well... but she has done serious damage to women in motorsports. Hell, there are people on here who think Johanna Long shouldn't have a ride because she's not 5'2" 105 lbs. Not to mention, her attitude -- I don't think Cup drivers and teams are going to put up with her for long. Honestly, I could see someone like Kyle Busch putting Johanna Long in his Nationwide car for a race or two (races Danica's running) just so she can outperform Princess Danica.

People don't hate Danica because she's a woman. There are tons of women drivers out there who have respect and that's because they're drivers who just happen to be women. Danica Patrick is an actress pretending to be a racecar driver at this point. Once she wasn't the center of attention in IndyCar anymore, she jumped ship over to NASCAR to keep herself in the spotlight. Her attitude is going to piss the Cup boys off. If she throws some of the hissy fits she threw in IndyCar, she's going to be spending a lot of time in the garage.

I just hope either another female driver gets a chance in the next year or two to show that women can be racecar drivers or that Danica finds a way in to victory lane. Otherwise, it's going to be damn near impossible for women, in the future, to ever get to NASCAR's top tier.

I see a lot of complaining about the boys being mean and intentional wrecking in Danica's future.
