Cars that are still competing in the playoffs just get more coverage than the rest. Sponsors pay to advertise their brand on the cars. While the details of those deals are unknown, it stands to reason that the more advertising those brands get, the more they pay the team.

And even that doesn't include the couple million of charter money, though I didn't mention that at first because right now they don't have a charter.

It's just one of those things that, like salary cap discussions in other sports, aren't as exciting, but matter a great deal.

I see what you are saying and that makes since in principle, but I'm not convinced that's how they get paid this season. Is it a part of negotiations for future deals, probably, but I would expect the McDonalds, Columbia, etc dollars have already been agreed upon and most likely already paid for this season.
