Round three of the Greatest Sprint Cup Driver Ever polls: Rules and info sharing

This post does not include all, I will supplement or complete with a few more post soon.

Round three will follow the usual format, however a tie breaking provision has been added (should any of the four polls result in a tie)

Round three will consist of four head to head matches, between the final eight eight drivers, listed by seed or ranking order.

1-Jimmie Johnson 37 votes
2-Dale Earnhardt 36 votes
3-David Pearson 35 votes
4-Richard Petty 32 votes
5-Cale Yarborough 28 votes
6-Lee Petty 27 votes, 79.41%
7-Bobby Allison 27 votes. 75.00%
8-Darrell Waltrip 27 votes, 65.85%

The rounds will be identified and seeded as:

-3.1 Seed 1 verses seed 8
-3.2 Seed 2 verses seed 7
-3.3 Seed 3 verses seed 6
-3.4 Seed 4 verses seed 5

Or

-3.1 Jimmie Johnson verses Darrell Waltrip
-3.2 Dale Earnhardt verses Bobby Allison
-3.3 David Pearson verses Lee Petty
-3.4 Richard Petty verses Cale Yarborough

The Four winning drivers from these polls will advance to round four.

More to come.....

Just to review how your votes are considered in the polls.

-The winners of each poll obviously advances to the next round. The drivers who do not get the most votes in their respective polls are eliminated.

-Getting many votes could help a driver in the next round, because the seeds are set based on the vote count.

-If two poll winners receive the same number of votes, then percentage of the votes is used to set the seed positions.

-If they still remain tied the original seed positions at the beginning of the contest are used as a last resort.

- It is understood that the polls are flawed, with a dose of a little science and luck. We have had some of all time greats eliminated already, and it guarantees the elimination of many more greats.

- In addition all polls are not created equal. Some will get easier match-ups or an easier path to the final showdown.

-Just remember it is only a poll. The drivers are still racing heroes regardless of our results. Make good cases for your heroes, the ones you believe to be greatest. If we honor their legacies and in a some small way keep their memories alive, it will have been worthwhile.

-Have fun.

I really wanted to use this tool and post a good stat sheet for all of the drivers, I just have not figured out a neat format.

But this example is the best one I have seen for a single spread sheet.

You can google the drivers name and like Petty/ nascar carreer stats / fantasy racing cheat sheet.

There is another one that is good, but it only list data from 1975 to present. With some one like Petty, Allison, or Cale I think this page is pretty good.

Round three is more than half way complete now. It is highly unlikely that we will have a tie. But if we do, we will not run those off head to head simply because they already tied once.
Hopefully this explanation will help, and this is the model that will be utilized if needed, just realize without ties the procedure remains unchanged, and none of the information below will be applicable.

If we have a scenario with three winners, one tie among two drivers, and three others having less votes, this will be the plan.
First we will seed the three winners as usual, based on the usual criteria.

1. The winning driver with the most votes will be seeded number one.
2. The winning driver with 2nd most votes will be seeded second.
3. The wining driver with the 3rd most votes will be seeded third.

If any of the above has the same amount of votes, then the seed position will be determined by who has the highest vote percentage. If they still remain tied, they will be seeded by their original seed position at the beginning of the contest.

Then the two drivers that tied will be seeded 4th and 5th, using the same measurements.

This will leave us with five drivers who aren’t eliminated, and the field has to be reduced to four prior to round four.

So from the three drivers that were eliminated, the one with the most votes will be allowed one more chance [remember this only is used for a tie breaking scenario] based on the

1. The highest Total vote count of those three
2. Or with the first tiebreaker highest poll vote percentage
3. If they’re still tied then finally the original seed position.

This will give a 6th seed who has not been eliminated.
Seeds number one and two would already be locked into the final four with no run-off.

The runoff would consist of:
-seed 3 verses seed 5
-seed 4 verses seed 6.

In the runoffs seeds 5 and 6 must win, if they tie in the runoff they will be eliminated.

Again this procedure is only posted in order to have clearly defined rules, and to avoid any appearance of favoritism.

Just a reminder the 4 polls in this round (3)close tonight. If you have not voted yet, today is your last oppouturnity.

If you are a visitor, registering allows you to participate, don't be shy, the more the merrier.

Provided there are no ties, round 4 featuring the final four begins tomorrow.
