Interesting....

TALLADEGA, Ala. -- Officials from Roush Fenway Racing "had a conversation" with IndyCar driver Danica Patrick as recently as two weeks ago when the Sprint Cup Series was in Phoenix for the Subway Fresh Fit 500.

And while Jack Roush, the founder and co-owner of the organization, said that he was not part of the conversation, he also said Friday from Talladega Superspeedway that he believes Patrick has an interest in eventually pursuing a future that would include at least some stock-car racing. He even offered to lay out a program for her indoctrination into NASCAR.

"I think Danica, from what I understand, has got an interest in stock-car racing," Roush said. "Any sponsor, any team owner that felt the need to have more of a diverse situation in their driving lineup would look at Danica very favorably."

Clint Bowyer makes a comment about 'diversity' and the money spent by teams and NASCAR in an attempt to make it more prevelant in the top series. I still say when you look at a driver, it should be with their helmet on, in the car, and on paper to judge their ability. This way - nothing else factors in.

note: I realize marketability is another issue where owners would want to meet face-to-face, etc. However I don't think this area should outweigh the ability portion.

Then why did JJ get his shot with Hendrick ?? He showed zero on paper or on the track in the BGN series before he was moved up. Marketability is #1 nowadays. If you can't keep a sponsor, you can't race. One of any 50 drivers could wheel that 48 to success week in & week out. They just need the equipment, team , and the face/marketability to get their shot. Signing her would be genius, IMO.

Yes, it would. Considering how unpopular Roush is, it sure help his image.

I don't think Danica can win in Cup, though. She's a rockstar in the IRL, but Cup is a different animal. Ask Dario. ;)

agreed, if anything, Roush should put Danica in a few ARCA events to see how she handles a stocker first before even considering her for a NASCAR ride in any of the three major series...

Jimmy got his ride with Hendrick at the urging of Jeff Gordon who saw Johnson had the ability to excel.

I disagree anybody could drive the 48 and win. Johnson wins because of his talent and by being cool under pressure when making those milli-second decisions that are so necessary to being a major contender every week.
John son did have a time when he had difficulty on super speedways but his determination got him past the "Jimmy will wreck" stage.

You don't win championships just because you have good equipment. It takes an entire team effort and the driver is one more of the pieces who make the total assembly, sucessful.

No question Johnson is also extremely marketable. But it goes beyond that as he is a proven winner and no one can dispute the fact he is damn good. Some feel he is better than his mentor.

Danica would be good for Roush Racing as she has total dedication and has shown she will do what it takes to be successful. Roush indicates he will put together a program of indoctrination before Danica starts in the Sprint Series.

I wish Ms. Patrick well no matter what path she follows as she is totally dedicated to her chosen profession. She has proven she is up to the task and more than just another pretty face for a sponsor.

His wife is pretty too...which helps in his marketability... :D

Lookie, another hater.

Just so from now on you can quit thinking Jimmie got his ride for a pretty face -

Jimmie had over 25 wins, 100 top-three finishes, six championships, and received Rookie of the Year in SODA, Mickey Thompson, and SCORE series. This was all before 1997.

'98 he joined ASA, where he finished fourth in the standings and snagged another Rookie of the Year. He also raced in three or four Busch events.

That next year, '99 he ran Busch and ASA. He won two races and finished third in the ASA standings.

In '00 and '01 he ran for Herzog in Busch, finished 10th in the points standings, got a win, and all without Hendrick equipment. This also doesn't include countless motorcycle racings wins, records, and honors that he accumulated as a kid/young adult until injuring his knee.

Now, did Gordon give him a shot? Yes. Herzog lost their sponsorship deal and Jimmie asked Jeff for advice. He got a shot, but it was hardly not earned. Is he a 'pretty boy' and markatable? Yes, but I'd have to say that's a nice benefit to his driving skills.

"Anyone" could do that with Hendrick equipment? I'd like to know why then we haven't seen Mears in the winner's circle yet. That's not a shot at Mears, it's to underline a point - if it's 'anyone', certainly he's talented enough to put that thing in victory lane right? It's Hendrick equipment. "Anyone"?

You really just need to quit hating.

Jeff did all right in that department too.

Not hating, just replying to your original post. he did nothing in BGN...your stats prove that. Here's a few of the BGN stats I speak of...Through 2007--87 starts, 1 WIN, 8 Top Fives. ASA wins & motorcycle stats have no more bearing that open wheel does for Patrick. Also, I stated that in the 48 ,that many drivers could succeed. Mears doesn't drive the 48, does he ?? We'll never know how someone else would do in the 48 with Knaus, so it's all opinion. If you don't like my opinion, that's fine...doesn't really matter to me. You really just need to read the post before responding next time.

And Kyle says I'm in the wrong for supporting Danica, Chrissy and Alli.

I'm still betting that Danica will stay with IRL for a few years. She wants to set records and make history there first. Now, after she wins Indy and/or the IRL championship than I'm sure she'll jump to NASCAR...unless open wheel racing makes a big come back as 'they' predict it may...F1 is always an option, too...

It's possible, but unlikely, IRL can come back.

If NASCAR gets a highly marketable woman racing in it's top leagues :chrissyoralli:, all the IRL thunder is silenced.

way to back up that victory danica currently 18th and not a factor

Ugh...so we're counting the years he was driving for Hendrick already? 5 years worth of your "87" starts would include him already having a Cup ride. You really need to look objectively instead of just disliking a driver. All driving experience factors into evaluating a driver. I never discounted any series, you did, by totally ignoring successes in three quality racing series. I apologize you're not a racing fan. I happen to be one. I enjoy all types, not just 36 races on Sunday afternoons.

Also, where did I say I was 'against' Patrick? She's my favorite IRL driver, so save all that for someone else.

My point, which you attemted to attack my driver on because you thought you knew what you were talking about, was why not evaluate drivers based on their performance and not by their gender or skin color through some 'diversity' program. Through programs like that, 'majority' drivers (see average white males) can possibly get passed by because the driver behind them happens to be a minority. It's a very politically incorrect position to take, and I'm happy defending it, because in the end I would imagine I'd be offended to know the scales had to be swung in my favor by a 'program' rather than my talent. Wouldn't you?

Funny how I was the one not reading. MMM kay.

Of course Roush spoke to Danica . He spoke to JV and told him to bring 11 million and they could do a Cup deal . Roush spoke to Pete Shepherd and told to bring 2 million and they could do a part time CTS deal . I am sure Jack told Danica to bring X millions and the bikini from the FHM photo spread and they could do a deal too .

Read my post...you got bent because I suggested(how wrong of me) that JJ may not have proven him, self in BGN series. That's a fact. Stop trying to twist this into something that it's not. I could give a cornbread if JJ wins or not. If you want to continue discussing this, PM me. Otherwise, cry in your pillow or something.:D

No, you took a shot for no reason. You definitely care about JJ or you wouldn't have singled him out or took the time to go looking up stats. :) Unless you carry them around in your head, in which case you not only care about JJ, you're obsessed. :) There's also no reason to take this to PM unless you have no valid retort and you're embarassed to admit you're wrong - which is exactly where you stand after you stood back, re-read my post, and saw you were, in fact, the one not grasping the original post (see "not reading"). Remember the post that didn't discount any driver, simply offered a news report, and a thought from someone that wished drivers were judged on paper and not solely on marketability? Oh wait, that was me.

Here, you're gonna need this pillow. Run along, the adults have more to talk about.
