NASCAR expands penalties that can lead to "encumbered finish": Despite all three championship Chases already underway in its three national series NASCAR on Thursday increased the number of penalties that it will trigger an "encumbered finish" going forward. Until Thursday, only post-race penalties involving failure of the Laser Inspection Station and improperly attached lug nuts could trigger an encumbered finish, which prevents the driver involved from using the finish from qualifying for or advancing in the Chase, or using the finish for eligibility in non-points races.

And the rest of the story. http://www.jayski.com/cupnews.htm#20160930b

So it really just made P5 and 6 penalties the same as P4.

I can't wait for the 1st encumbered loose lug nut finish. That's gonna be fun.

The threshold they set was 17 or fewer at the end, so you're really going to have to try to get that penalty.

The nightmare scenario for NASCAR will be when the champion is found to be in violation of one of these things. Will they rescind the championship? Or will they sweep the violation under the rug? I tend to think the latter given the embarrassment and anger it would cause.

The nightmare scenario is exactly what they wrote the new rules for. These are now all things that would take that finish away. That's the way I read it.

I think NASCAR will come to regret making things explicit. There was a reason NASCAR ruled a long time ago that they wouldn't vacate wins--so the fans in the stands (and now on tv) don't feel like they got cheated. NASCAR has turned the championship into the biggest win of all.

Oh. I thought we wanted this sort of thing.

Very confusing.

I'm not saying this is good or bad in theory, but that it will lead to some negative outcomes and bad press in practice. Just imagine the outcry when a fan favorite loses his championship (after all the interviews and celebration btw) because of a loose lugnut. You'd never see the winner of the Super Bowl declared the loser hours after the event because of an unlaced shoe, but NASCAR is setting itself up for an outcome like that.

Is there a penalty for an unlaced shoe in the NFL?

Personally, I'd rather see them get it right. If it means taking a win away so be it.

You guys know about deflategate, right? There were calls for the pats to vacate their superbowl win but the NFL didn't have the balls to do it. However they went after Brady with a vengeance and he's only now serving his suspension 2 years later. Don't think that people in other sports wouldn't love to have these kind of penalties that NASCAR does.

I love how NASCAR is making all these rule changes DURING its postseason.
I think the Truex win and subsequent failed inspections by both he and Johnson that weekend only magnified the need to address the problem.

Edit..... Things that would have not needed addressed in the pre Chase era. As this format continues, the inherent flaws in the system start to rear their ugly head.

What about at homestead. I always wandered if the championship cars are cheated up for the last race. I think nascar wants one of them winning

I think that's what is covered under the 'or using the finish for eligibility in non-points races.' section of the statement. That last race is not a points paying race for those final four cars. Only the positions matter.

No, per Bob Pockrass this would still impact the championship if found at Homestead, IE they would lose the title.

Could NASCAR WANT this???? as in they want the eyeballs on the screen the drama...:welllllllll wait and see will his or her win be taken way.....lets wait and see"

Oh. I thought it meant an 'encumbered win' would not count toward eligibility in the Shootout or All-Star races.

I guess it could be although the rest of the same sentence is exclusively about the Chase. Who knows? I guess it's all up to interpretation. That's probably the way they like it. ;)

I hope so bad someone goes to Homestead with a cheated up car.
I think it's accepted that is what happens. They want those 4 cars racing for the win. The rule is they do not want the winner of the race in question even if they had a 400 cig motor. Someone said they cheat up the cars for the last race

Even if the lottery winner has a big block under the hood there will be no violation as that would be swept under the rug.

Set the rules before the season starts, no rule changes till next season.
