Seen on a couple of small sites that NASCAR was handed an extension from Monster but opted to decline due to NASCAR’s new sponsorship model.

Didn't realize NASCAR was in a position to refuse $20 million a year for the title sponsor.

Monster Energy has been a great partner for NASCAR. This is a shame.

I sure hope NASCAR knows what it's doing.

Believe it or not...I actually trust NASCAR with business decisions regarding business and not racing. Despite their sport shrinking severely by any measure they have maintained financial success...so they are doing something right.

How so? I like the brand and their interest in various motorsports, but this always felt like an uneasy partnership to me. I'm glad that Monster will still be involved in some capacity though.

Monster felt like it was a silent partner, you only saw them promoting its brand and NASCAR at the track. Hell, Ive seen more Monster commercials for Motorcycles and boxing then with NASCAR.

That was my disappointment too. Monster is all in on their motocross, rally, and off-road sponsorships. When the news was first announced, I was optimistic and thought the $20 million didn't matter, because Monster was about to throw their promotional weight behind NASCAR.

Never really happened. The culture of the two companies doesn't really mesh at that level. Being the official energy drink partner or whatever is a better fit. It also will open that category back up. I don't think Red Bull will ever re-enter, but some of the smaller brands may have an interest.

Yea, I was disappointed when Monster Energy didn't really promote NASCAR outside of the track. I think the only thing I saw was the NASCAR logo on their original Monster Energy can and that's about it.

Competiton would be great IMO. Big Rich will be sponsoring Ed Jones in IndyCar, so I think it would be a great opprotunity. Coca-Cola is a big deal for NASCAR, I wonder if they would be open to the competition? I'd really like to see Red Bull back as a sponsor, not as a team though.

Monster, I felt did not so a great job of pushing NASCAR outside of the track or during a telecast IMO. They have done some things in larger markets, but nothing like I thought they would.

Remember when UPS was the "offcial delivery service of NASCAR"? Not the Title sponsor but they still sank Millions and Millions in to the sport promoting it and thier brand. Race the "Big Brown Truck was brilliant. Thats the kind of thinking we need now.

It needs to be pushed better. Especially in Daytona, considering that's where HQ is located. Bethune Cookman, Emory-Riddle, and local colleges are close. NASCAR should push the colleges more as well. Go to universities, talk about the product and what NASCAR can bring to the table. Plenty of engineering opprotunties, marketing positions, communication positions, IT positions. Talk about the long-term, the stability of NASCAR career wise to interest younger generation.

Make college packages like they do for Richmond and Kentucky. Have a section for them and this will create questions to spark interest. So many things could be done better, but there is a reason why I'm on a message board and not an actual member... So many things can be done better by the primary sponsor, NASCAR, SMI, and ISC...

UPS was genius from that campaign as well and Dale Jarrett was a hand and glove fit.

I wouldn't go so far as to say $20 million is pocket change to NASCAR, but they did lose Brian's salary, so there's that...:idunno:

20 million is about what they should be paying for a full time car sponsorship. BUT nascar normally makes the title sponsor agree to buy TV ads instead with most of the money. Its pretty clear big changes are actually happening with brian gone.

  15. gnomesayin

    gnomesayin Team Owner

Haha, are we actually sure about that? I know he was on "indefinite leave", but is it unpaid?

I think that they believe they can sell a total of $20 million or close enough to it through this tiered partnership model, and it grants them more flexibility.

As with the team sponsorship markets, there appear to be many more corporations willing to spend at the $5 million level than the $20+ million level.

IDK if this still applies but when Red Bull exited they said it was because their brand and Nascar didn’t gel well.

Nascar was a much bigger entity when UPS was involved and DJ was a known commodity.

Rest assured that Brian’s direct deposits are still being made.

Ontario Canada is (possible) changing their laws to encourage "Tailgating Parties" at various
sporting venues ( reported on the news). I wonder if this would encourage Nascar to include Canada as a possible race date.

Canada having to encourage people to tailgate by federal law just means I don’t need to make a trip to Canada soon :D

I am not discounting what you are saying as I think it is a really good idea. What UPS did was a huge capital expenditure and IDK if those sorts of things are available.

jws926 I need to think of something new for here

Ive come to like Monster being the title sponsor of the Cup Series(cant stand product though), I hope NASCAR knows what they are doing, my guess is what they have lined up for 2020 is going to be bigger in terms of financials for them if they are going to pass on 20mil .

And Monster wanting to return for one more year is good, that means they must be getting a solid return on their investment of being the title sponsor for the Cup Series.( not counting the team sponsor)

And, my final thought, if they are going to be saving $20mil, I wonder if they will increase their sponsorship budget at the team level if they continue that in 2020

Monster now owns NOS, but NOS must be independently managed, because they are now all over sprint car and open wheel dirt racing, an area Monster hasn't touched.

I think Nascar did the right thing if in fact Monster made the offer and they turned it down. Even though 20 million is nothing to sneeze at Nascar must figure they can’t do any worse than that going a different route.

Coca-Cola is probably a lock for one of the top-tier sponsorships, and @StandOnIt posted recently that GEICO is as well I believe. Some others that could factor in...Sunoco, Mobil 1 to name a couple.

Sad to see Monster go, but it is a good financial decision for NASCAR. Why make $20M from 1 sponsor when you can make $10M each from 4 sponsors?

Consider it was against the law for you to stand on your front lawn and drink beer, this is a good move IMO Won't have to worry about some rookie cop trying to make his stripes.
My BIL had to much to drink at a family supper so he left his car there and walked home.
Rookie stopped him and charged him with being intoxicated in a public place.
    Sometimes you can't cure stupid.
Tailgating at a sporting event is a big step. Of course it is now legal to stand around and smoke pot just couldn't have a beer in your hand. :D
