Late Monday evening, former NASCAR champion and ESPN/ABC Sports lead auto racing analyst, Rusty Wallace and his wife, Patti, were involved in a major auto accident while returning from the weekend’s IndyCar Series event and a taping of the “NASCAR Angels” television show in California. The 2006 Dodge Durango Wallace was driving was hit directly in the driver’s door by another motorist who ran a stop sign. Miraculously, all parties involved survived unscathed and did not require medical treatment.(RWI PR)(8-29-2006)

Retired driver Rusty Wallace involved in crash; lives to endorse again
CCORNELIUS, N.C. (AP) -- File this one under: ``Only in NASCAR.''

Former NASCAR champion Rusty Wallace walked away from an accident in which a driver talking on her cell phone ran a stop sign and collided with Wallace's SUV -- then used the occasion to tout the safety of his Dodge Durango.

"You hear car companies talk about safety a lot,'' the former driver of the No. 2 Dodge said in a statement Tuesday, "but I can tell you that (wife) Patti and I are both really thankful for the research and development that Dodge puts into the safety of their vehicles.''

A report filed by police in this Charlotte suburb said the crash occurred shortly after 11 p.m. Monday, when a 2004 Mercedes driven by Stacy Earls Greene struck the driver's side door of Wallace's 2006 Dodge. Wallace's wife, Patti, was a passenger in his vehicle; 4-year-old Trey Greene was riding in Stacy Greene's car.

"Driver ... stated she was talking on her cell phone and did not see stop sign on Harborside (Drive), causing her to strike the left side of'' Wallace's truck, officer Marc Fasano wrote.

No one involved in the accident required medical treatment. The 50-year-old Wallace said he and his wife were on their way home after attending an IndyCar Series race and a taping of the ``NASCAR Angels'' television show in California over the weekend; Wallace is an auto racing analyst for ABC and ESPN.

"I've been in a lot of crashes in my time, but that was one of the craziest things I think I've ever experienced,'' Wallace said. "We really got knocked around there and we're both really sore.''
Got this from KnowYourNascar.

I wonder if she was charged with running a STOP sign, wreckless Driving, etc., and WHY DID SHE have a 4 year old out at that time of night?

As far as I'm concerned, it should be illegal in ALL state to be talking on a cell while driving, Bluetooth or not!

glad

Glad to hear he and his family are OK. They should take away your cell phone if you use when driving. People are ridiculous with these darn phones. I was at the doctor today and there was some girl on the cell phone sitting in a chair right below thew no cell phone sign.......but I'm the A-Whole for telling her..........idiots

People have allowed cell phone to take over their life and I just don't understand why. Whatever did they do before we had this technology. It's like as soon as they walk out the door they have to be on the phone.
For personal reasons I got a Cingular phone to have at work (it's a long story). And, I got their cheapest plan. At the end of the year's contract when I went to cancel the service I had accumulated over 3600 minutes. We now have 1 of those pay as you go phones that you have to buy at least $20 every 3 months. In 8 months of use I have a $70 balance but at least I'm saving money.
So yeah when you point out their mis-use you are seen as an a-hole. Pat yourself on the back for not allowing today's spoiled brats to just do what they want...

95% of the time that someone almost runs in to me on the road it is some bonehead on the phone. If you blast the horn at them they get p.o.'d that you had the nerve to interrupt their phone conversation.
It's probably going to take several people getting mamed or even possibly killed by these idiots on the phone behind the wheel before laws get passed banning cell phone use while driving.
Cell phones should be the same treated the same as an open whiskey bottle, they should be transported in the trunk.

We have all heard about the folks

that can't walk and chew gum at the same time.. Well there ARE folks that can't drive and talk on the phone at the same time. No doubt about it.
Outlawing talking on the phone would limit sales somewhat. So what do you think the phone lobbiests are doing? Even the hands free versions are unsafe. Time and time again I see the folks in front of me lifting and then feeling around for the phone controls when it rings.
There are some things that just are NOT needed by society.
And those of you that have given a phone to your kids? Are you NUTS? Think of what the future holds with everyone needing to be hooked up to a phone all their life.
Betsy

Try a guy that's on a cell on the wrong side of the road on a hill.....

otherwise we'd still have our pristine 65 mustang... (heck, we had to sue the insurance company to get the car's worth from them....even after giving them every reciept we ever had for the car)
