Ryan Newman 2002 ROTY

Near as I can figure it Ryan has clinched the ROTY. UNLESS the rookie panel decides to award points to change the outcome of the points earned in the races.

Even the panel should not be factor as I understand its workings.

Ryan leads the rookie standings over Jimmie by 20 points. The highest number of points that Jimmie can earn at Homestead is 21. No matter what Ryan does, since only the best 17 races count, he already has a 13 point race in the bag. So the most Jimmie can gain is 8.

That would give Ryan the award by 12 points.

There is a bonus point award after the final race which gives the rookie accumulating the most Winston Cup points over the last 16 races 10 bonus points, then 9 points to the next rookie, and so on down to 1 point.

Worst case Ryan loses another point to JJ, to make his margin 11 points.

The panel then awards further points to the Rookies on a 10 to one scale in another four categories:

Conduct with Officials
Track Conduct and Awareness
Personal Appearance
Media Relationship

The points are awarded on at 10 down to 1 scale again. If I understand this correctly one would guess that again worst case, JJ would get 10 points in each category and Ryan would most likely get 9. That would be another 4 point swing to JJ.

That still leaves Ryan with a 7 point margin, even if the panel for some reason wre to rank Ryan third in each of those categories that would only be another 4 point swing, still leaving Ryan with a 3 point margin.

This is to the best of my understanding, if someone has better info please advise before I give full congrats to Ryan.

Geez, and I only thought it was the top 15 finishes. Make it simple on us is that too much to ask?

hey!, thanks for the info, i have been wondering for a long time how that all worked:)

Well thats good for him I think that Ryan was one hell of a driver and a whole lot better through out the year on being consistant then Jimmie was.

Well pettyfan, that is like saying Martin was more consistant than Stewy:eek:

ROTY should be awarded just like the cup, most consistant=highest in points.

That logic won't work for Pettyfan because he hates Stewart.

Newmans got ROTY, Jimmie can't catch him. Seems like Jimmie kinda faded out a little lately.

Johnson was a little streaky all year anyway. He was hot then cold, hot then cold.

The only reason Newman isn't farther in the points is because of engine problems or accidents. I can't remember one race where he actually didn't have a fast car, even when he went to a backup car. I think Newman deserves the ROTY award over Johnson by a far stretch.

its all just too confusing to me.. i think both have earned it so i don't really care who gets it.

He's had an excellent season, no doubt.

Unfortunately, he ends a 6-year streak I had going of guessing who the ROTY before the season starts. This year's pick was Jimmie Johnson, at least Johnson didn't completely let me down.

6 out of 7 isn't bad though. Wonder what my pick for next year will be...

Just curious .

I picked Busch to win ROTY last year.

Do you make your pick before the season starts? I did not think Harvick was planning to run for ROTY til this year.

Maybe a good thing for him he ran last season. This year and the year before were tough races>

Newman has been the best rookie by far this year, he deserves it. That 12 car has been fast every single race this year.

I think Newman should get ROTY..............but Jimmie shouldn't be too far behind........

Well I will give my opinion although I may be a little biased. !st let me say what an outstanding year the both of them have had. Jimmie Johnson is a good driver with great equipment. Now if we did this the way Nascar says it does the ROTY award, they take the top 15 races of each driver. Jimmie Johnson's top 15 races-------(3) wins, (2) 3rd's, (1) 4th, (5) 6th's, and (4) 7th's for an average of 4.733 with 5 poles. Newman's top 15 were (1) win, (5) 2nd's, (1) 3rd, (3) 4th's, (4) 5th's, and (1) 7th for an average of 3.533 with 6 poles.

I'm confused.

Where does the "15 races" come from?

Everywhere I look says 17.

thanks for the figuring HS.....emotional baggage aside, looks like a lock to me.

I read thru the roty points stuff and pretty much saw the writing on the wall a while back. Unless nascar changes the rules, he's in there.

might be premature (tho I doubt it0 but....

Congrats to Ryan Newman.:)

it's 17, not 15 from my understanding. And after figuring in all the other factors for points awards, Ryan as I said is pretty much a lock.

That's what I thunk, but it seems to come up more than once.

Hey 71 have ya got yerself moved and situated?

It's great to get a new place, but I'd rather crawl through a keg of nails than move.:D

yea....got a beautiful morning sunrise upstairs foom for the pooter. backs a bit sore and still plenty more to do...

I think what yer seeing is just a bunch of emotiomal baggage. Doesn't matter what people think. The scoring is the scoring. Same thing goes with Martin/Stewart thing and the 25 points that got away. Doesn't matter what folks think, the scoring is the scoring.

Either will make a great Champ, and either will make a great ROTY, but the one that deserves it the most will be the one to get it as decided by the scoring.

As EF Hutten's commercial proclaims.....We make money the old fashioned, we earn it.

HardScrabble,

What I do is at prior to the Daytona 500, I look at the rookie drivers that will be running for ROTY that year and choose one.

I used to write an article about it each year for my old website. I started with Johnny Benson and had been right each year up until this. I just didn't think Newman would have enough to get it, but I was wrong. Oh well, had to break my streak sometime!

congrats to ryan, but jimmie was more consistant if he wasn't he would be below neman in the points. Im tired of hearing about the engine blowups with ryan. Don't people remember the race mark hit jimmie (on acident) he had problems all day. He had those gear problems at watkins glen. ALso others I can't name, They both had there problems, jimmie was more consistant but ryan was more consistant on the rookie tracks.

Anyway congrats to ryan and jimmie, I think you'll be seeing them for years to come.
