This just makes it all the more likely that Blaney will leave the team.

CONCORD, N.C. -- Ryan Pemberton will part ways with Jasper Motorsports following the 2002 season after a three-year partnership.

MB2 and MBV Motorsports general manager Jay Frye said that Pemberton would return to work on the team's U.S. Army Pontiacs with newly-hired driver Jerry Nadeau.

"Getting Ryan and Jerry was the partnership we wanted," Frye said. "We were talking to a number of potential sponsors, but the deal with the Army was the one we really wanted to get because of the connections they have to all types of accessories and technology that we didn't have before."

Pemberton and Nadeau previously worked together at MB2. Frye said Newt Moore, who had worked as Ken Schrader's crew chief for the past two seasons, was exploring other employment options.

Nadeau and Pemberton will have their first opportunity to work together Monday and Tuesday, when General Motors sponsors a test of its 2003 Chevrolets and Pontiacs at Homestead. Frye said MB2 and MBV each had a pair of 2003 Grand Prix to test.

"That will give us a head start on next year," Frye said. "When Jerry and Ryan worked together in 1999 there was a great spark there, and it will be interesting to see, now that they have moved along in their careers, how quickly they can pick up where they left off."

"I want to thank (owners) Doug Bawel, Mark Harrah, Mark Wallace, Robert Pressley, Dave Blaney and all of the team members of Jasper Motorsports for the opportunity and the support they've given me since 1999," said Pemberton, 33.

"I'm proud of the progress that the race team has made in the last three years, and I wish continued success to all of the people that have been part of the program."

After serving as one of the youngest crew chiefs in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series for three seasons (1997-99) with the No. 36 MB2 Pontiac team, Pemberton joined Jasper Motorsports prior to the 2000 campaign.

Under his guidance, the organization advanced to 23rd in the standings in 2001, registering six top-ten finishes with driver Robert Pressley including the team's best career finish -- a runner-up performance at Chicagoland Speedway in July.

With one race remaining in the current season, the team is currently ranked 19th with driver Dave Blaney, and is in position to finish in the top-20 in the final owner points standings for the first time in its eight-year history.

The No. 77 team is ranked second in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series in both the laps- and miles-completed categories.

This fall, Pemberton became the third-youngest Winston Cup crew chief to surpass $10 million in career earnings for his entries.

"We are proud of what Ryan has brought to our team and thank him," said Doug Bawel, president of Jasper Engines & Transmissions and co-owner of the No. 77 Jasper Motorsports team.

With Pemberton leaving, it would surprise me if Blaney stayed. The 77 is having a tough time getting people to stay for that team.
