I'm saddened to give the news that one of my most favorite jazz musicians has died. Maynard Ferguson died today at the age of 78 from kidney failure. My "relationship" with Maynard goes way back to the days when one of my uncles "introduced" me to his music with an album of Jazz from Montreau. I'll never forget that first song I hear Maynard perform...it was "Old Man River" and from that day on, I was hooked. Maynard played the trumpet and was known for his ability to this those high, high notes with ease. Not sure, but I believe that he started out with Stan Kenton, another favorite and then went on his own with a "big band" of his own. I was privleged to see Maynard's band back in the 70's live and will never forget that. I think that I've got every album that Maynard and his band made and a few while he was with Kenton.

RIP Maynard and now you're up there with so many of the greats that I can't imagine the sounds that will be made up there.

bp, if you like Maynard, and since you replied to this thread I assume that you do, what do you think of Arturo Sanduval? Maynard was one of his biggest influences. Arturo is no Maynard, but yet he has his own unique abilities that puts him in the same league. And he too can hit that double high C easily, but he can his some notes that are so low that one would assume that it was played by a baritone bugle or maybe even an tuba. Those low notes are just as hard to play and maintain.

You mean something like "I can't get started"? I absolutely love it. But, I'm hardly an afficianado. I listen to a lot of different music. If it sounds good I listen.

Actually, lots lower than that. He did a gig at Jacksonville Jazz Fest back in '93 I believe and there he played a song where he was hitting those top notes right and left, then he started going down the scale. We're talking way way down until he hit something that you'd think that only a tuba could hit. Anyway, I just love the guy and his life story was made into a movie. That was a great movie as well with Andy Garcia playing Arturo.
