TMS to be SAFER place for June races

By John Sturbin

Star-Telegram Staff Writer

Installation of the SAFER Barrier system at Texas Motor Speedway is scheduled to begin next month and be completed before the Indy Racing League's Bombardier 500 night race June 12, eight months after Kenny Brack's horrifying accident on the 1.5-mile quadoval.

Approximately 6,300 linear feet of the Steel and Foam Energy Reduction (SAFER) system -- also known as "soft-wall" technology -- will be installed in five sections of TMS beginning the week of May 10. Work on the project, which carries a $1.7 million price tag, will take two to three weeks and be done at night by engineers of parent company Speedway Motorsports Inc.

That's good news.

Oh, and TRL, when you click the link, it asks you to register. Just so you folks know, it is free.

It's about time,as fast a track as Texas is I was hoping that the safer walls would've been in place in time for the Cup event there this season, better late than never I suppose ;)

Other tracks were in line ahead of TMS. Only two companies make the materials for the SAFER barriers. They are producing as fast as they can.
