SAFER barriers

Although it won't help Kyle it may help other drivers.. as a result of his wreck both Kentucky and ATL will begin adding SAFER barriers to their tracks..

~ According to the statement, the Atlanta track -- which has hosted NASCAR's top series since its 1960 opening -- will add 130 linear feet of protective barrier for this weekend, extending coverage of the protective wall at the exit of pit road near Turn 1 and an additional tire barrier along the inside wall of Turn 4.

~ Kentucky Speedway general manager Mark Simendinger says track officials have long considered adding more Steel and Foam Energy Reduction barriers to the Sparta, Ky., track's walls. Simendinger said the track has considered adding the barriers in the past, but realized the urgency after seeing the accident Saturday.
"I've always said safety is our No. 1 thing, so that's what we're going to do assuming we can get the work done between now and our races," set for July 9-11.

^ They know what they need.

They also know how much it costs.

You knew this was coming and it likely has more to do with CYA and PR then driver safety, IMO.

No excuse not to have those anywhere a car can come into contact with the wall at speed.

Not to be a dick about it ... but they don't need $4000/sqft safer barriers ... a gravel pit and a couple of rows of old goodyears would have done the trick.
Check it out.

After a review of the track's existing SAFER barrier system, Atanta Motor Speedway will add 130 linear feet of protective barriers ahead of this weekend's NASCAR races. The tire packs being used were shipped from Charlotte Motor Speedway on Tuesday.

According to a statement released early Tuesday morning, "the protective wall at the exit of Turn 1 will be extended, and a tire barrier will be added along the inside wall of Turn 4" to help increase the safety of the competitors.

Scott Cooper, a Speedway Motorsports, Inc. spokesperson, told FOXSports.com the tire packs were being shipped to AMS from Charlotte Motor Speedway on Tuesday. The track will send three flat-bed tractor-trailer trucks with 74 tire packs, with each tire pack containing 15 tires. In all, CMS will ship over 1,100 tires to AMS to be installed before Thursday.

this should not be an issue. SAFER walls=keep stars safe and have NASCAR for along time
UNSAFE WALLS=stars will get injured, maybe worse. No NASCAR

glad another driver didn't have to die. F-1 is so far ahead of Nascar in safety thanks to Jackie Stewart and his small band of dedicated drivers years ago.

The drivers seats, Hans Device and safer barriers are the biggest improvements I can think of in my time( 50 yrs)

Yeeesh I dunno sometimes. A car lands in a gravel pit and all they do is wave a local yellow while a track crew goes out and removes the car. Pretty sure last year this happened possibly at Suzuka, and I've said it so many times if one car can find its way into any location then another one can too. Local yellow was waved, crane and crew went out to clean up and I'm pretty sure another car came off course straight into them and killed a worker?

I know that's not driver safety but then I believe it is because if a car is just left out in the open it becomes a pretty decent road block to whoever hits it. They do this in the V8 Supercar series over here too and it drives me insane. A big heavy car spins off on a corner and they'll leave the thing there. If he can spin out and land there, so can the next person.

SAFER barriers are needed for the outside of the track. Tire stacks for the inside of the track. They absorb a lot more energy and- if done correctly- don't send the car bouncing back onto the track.

Cole Whitt didn't even hit the actual wall
