As he said, he knew the bat was corked but didn't "intend" to use it.

If he didn't intend to use it, why was it in the dugout?

it was an accident....

he uses a cork bat during batting practice. Supposedly he grabbed the wrong bat. I could understand that since they all look the same

I was shocked with that news. Not that it happened in a game, but why use it in batting practice? Just to put on a show for the fans that get there early? If it is illegal to use in a game why even have it at all? Thats just asking for trouble.

My thoughts exactly, bowtie. To even have an illegal bat anywhere near the dugout, or at the ballpark before a game, is just beyond me.

It could have been an accident. But like one other tread on the Nascar board. Everybody has a top 5 car. Yeah right. :D

well I have used a corked bat and it does make a real differance, it just makes you wonder if he used it before??

I think
all bats must be a certain weight with the batter holding it.
all bats must be a certain density.
all bats must meet MLB inspectors templates.
all bats must have inspection sticker before going onto the field. :p
no bat can be touched after inspection, untill your turn to be on deck.
After the game all winning bats will have a post game inspecion, for excissive spit.

I couldn't resist

From what I have been hearing other current and former big leaguers say "Everybody has different bats for batting practice and for game use, it is virtually impossible not to know the difference between the two". Not everyone says the same thing word for word, but almost all are saying the same thing. I think this really does do a lot to tarnish his image. I don't think for a minute that he used corked bats for all, or even most, of his 500+ home runs. But, now everyone will wonder how many of those home runs were with illegally corked bats. It was a very foolish gamble for him to take in my opinion.

I also think that if he was using corked bats for a long time, it would have been discovered before now. These guys break bats all the time.
