Gillett, RPM partnering with Saudi Prince: In what could turn out to be one of the oddest pairings in the history of American stock car racing, Richard Petty Motorsports' primary shareholder George Gillett Tuesday signed an 'exclusive commercial collaboration' agreement for his stake in the team to Prince Faisal bin Fahd bin Abdullah al-Saud, a member of the Saudi Royal Family. The agreement signed Tuesday forms a partnership that will see the development of a NASCAR racing circuit and Richard Petty racing schools in the Saudi Kingdom and elsewhere in the Middle East. "The Middle East sport market has immense growth potential as eager fans in the region demand access to more diverse, higher caliber competition. I am delighted, enthusiastic, and honored to have the opportunity to partner with such a visionary in His Highness Prince Faisal," said Gillett after the signing. According to many however, the agreement signed Tuesday is the first step to Gillett selling his stake in the team. As the two were publicly confirming the agreement, behind the scenes, Gillett and Prince Faisal acting on behalf of the Saudi sports investment group F6 he chairs, have begun a process of 'due diligence', the examination of financial records, with the goal being that Gillett would be bought out by the end of the year. The primary deal in the works actually centers on British football club Liverpool that Gillett owns a 50% stake in, but the deal would also include Richard Petty Motorsports. The Prince was at Anfield Stadium in England on Saturday as a guest Gillett, who confirmed that he has secured funding from the Saudi prince for his NASCAR team and an agreement to build Liverpool-branded football academies in the Middle East. The entire deal is reportedly worth up to $560 million.

My first thought...off the top of my head. Gillett is bad for Nascar.

They've already got the Australian V8 Supercars in the middle east and those shouldn't be there. They don't need NASCAR too.

NASCAR never did well in foreign markets, so I doubt this will stick.

What a bunch of...... Don't they know where the 9-11 terrorists came from? There goes more AMERICAN MONEY.

I guess they have sponsorship ties. Like 7-11, Ciircle K and RaceTrac.

Does this mean Richard Petty will have to take of his Cowboy hat and wear a Turban!!!

It makes me sick that the sport has come down to this. People trading in and out of NASCAR. I wished Petty would throw in the towel, and get his name out from under what was formerly his family team. It is a mockery to the Roots of the sport. With all this monkey business going on the the Association, I give NASCAR 5 years before it is irrevalent in the sports world.

Isn't some Ahab the Arab buying a NBA team? I know one has bought up a lot of throughbred horses. A few ran in the Triple Crown this year, look for more in the years to come. Money is no object for them.

It'll be the saudi cup before we know it.:sarcasm:

Instead of "gentlemen, start your engines" it'll be "Lalalalalalalala"

I stand corrected. I'm not a fan of the NBA just heard something, I think on Sports Center flipping thru the channels.

I can see it now, in victory lane after the Dubei 500 Sponsored by 7-11, the always smiling Sprint girl with a Red dot on her forehead.

Instead of a pace car they'll have a camel!:D

Oh, and the Chase for the Slurpy Cup.

But the Saudis know a little about Thoroughbred horses. I doubt they know much about Nascar.

money has no allegiance to any country. if you've got it all you want is more. any where, any time. if the saudi's bring it brian france will welcome them with open arms. one businessman to another. <g>

OK, so this is just wrong in every sense of the word but I couldn't resist.....

They raced in Australia and it was a failure. They raced in Japan and it was a failure. They raced in Mexico and it was a failure. NASCAR don't belong in Saudi Arabia (which, btw, is where most of the 9-11 hijackers came from).

That's a scary thought but I could see it happening if they offered the right price.

I think I said that this will not succeed. Nascar is purely a USA sport, and always will be.

Honestly, I think this is much-ado-about-nothing.

OK, so Gillete/RPM made a deal with the Saudi equvilant of Paris Hilton: a rich brat, with too much money they never earned, and enough ego so he wants to put his nose where it don't belong. Big deal.

Remember: this is NASCAR, not the bloated FIA. Like it or not, the France family controls everything about this sport. And that's the way it should be. This isn't anything like a Saudi team, or even a Saudi owner. Even if something like that did happen, Brian France can prevent them from entering the sport with no reason needed. In the religion of NASCAR, he's God.

Besides, NASCAR is a loooong way from becoming an International sport. No one in Europe understands oval racing, and no one wants to. Just the same way that American's don't understand F1 or "Commie Kickball" to quote another thread. :growl:

Let them open their Richard Petty Racing school in Saudi Arabia. Those that can afford to race anything besides camels wont show up because they're too busy crashing their Lambos.

I wonder if a stock car can even run in that environment, alot of loose sand in the desert in the Middle East.

Obviously you never watched a race at Rockingham and Darlington. Lots of sand down there.

Being a Petty fan I can see why you agree with this:rolleyes:

Okay- Invading Iraq and causing hundreds of thousands of deaths and many times more maimed, bankrupting our economy and stretching our military to the breaking point in the interest of building better relations in the Middle East- good idea?

Exporting one of the USA's most popular and uniquely American sports with one of its most recognizeable figures as ambassador and the possibility of it adding money to our economy- Bad idea?

Rockingham is in the middle of ****in' nowhere. Talk about a dumpy town, there's nothing there. Biggest thing to happen in that town is an ARCA race that attracts all of 15,000 people.

I love Rockingham Speedway but that area is a dump. Thank god my motel room was right next to Darrell Basham.

With the Petty,Yates merger and now this Petty,Gillette,Saudi Prince deal does Jack trade his hat for a towel.

Having to go to 4 teams, having difficulty getting big bucks from sponsors it wouldn't surprise me to see him throw the towel in completely. With all his other business concerns he doesn't need the agravation of Na$car.
