Johnny Sauter will replace Jeremy Mayfield in the No. 70 Chevrolet fielded by Haas CNC Racing for Saturday night's Subway Fresh Fit 500 Sprint Cup race at Phoenix. (Entry list)

Sauter drove for Haas last year, but the team chose to go with Mayfield and Scott Riggs as its two drivers for the 2008 season. Mayfield fell to 36th in owner points with a 38th-place finish at Texas, hence outside the top-35 positions that are guaranteed starting spots in Cup races.

Sauter posted one of his two top-10 finishes in 2007 at Phoenix, finishing ninth in the spring race. He finished 15th in the fall race. Two of Sauter's three career top 10s in 67 Cup races have come at Phoenix.

Tis a cutthroat/results business for sure!! To bad, I kinda like Mayfield for what ever reason, nothing against Sauter. But if your not getting the job done, Oh Well. Duane

I am a fan of mayfield hes a cool guy, but he did kind of kill his chances to get into a good ride with the whole evernham thing. Ill still watch him if he goes and jumps into the ASA latemodels again.

He ran his mouth a lot behind the scenes as Penske....wore out his welcome there too.

I think Jereamy is days of contending for a win in the spint cup series is over. I am jereamy Mayfield fan but it seems like hes had a ton of chances and he cant deliver.

have you ever met him?

if you haven't you would probly change your mind after you did. met him in nashville (away from the track) and frankly he was an ass

Yeah I met him a few years ago away from the track. Him and his wife were cool as hell. They took the time to stop and bs for awile and werent hollywood like some of the drivers.

I have a feeling we will say the same thing about sauter in a couple weeks. He is running out of chances as well. He might be a nationwide lifer, or back to asa

I actually think this guy has talent.....i thought he got screwed when he was fired after the season last year....he ran well for a team with sub par equipment.

I guess Haas realized that they made a mistake and wanted him back in their cars.

good move on their part.

I know in the day of wanting a ride in the big show this will never happen but if I were Sauter I would tell them to go jump in a lake!!!

After all they were the one's that canned him at the end of last year after he ran as respectable as a team of the caliber HAAS is could run and put Mayfeild in there. Now that Mayfeild cannot do any better in a sub-par car they want Sauter back.

I'd say good riddance to them if I were him but I know he just wants to drive.

Sauter says he's only in the #70 for this weekend:

UPDATE 2: Johnny Sauter told Sirius NASCAR Radio's Sirius Speedway Tuesday that he is signed to drive the #70 only this weekend in Phoenix, but hopes to land the ride full-time. "We've got a week off after Phoenix," said Sauter, "so they've got a little time to look around and figure out what they want to do down the road."(4-9-2008)

I agree with you. To me NASCAR is not where its at anymore. There are more and more drivers that dont care if they make it there anymore. If I were sauter I would be talking to people looking for a good offer too. Of course it might never come. But he could run in the back in sub par equipment, or run nationwide or asa in great equipment. I know he wants to hit it in cup, but man the guys got talent on a short track he could make an awesome career doing that in the short track series, instead of wasting his peak years of driving waiting for a decent cup ride to come along.
