In the final WC (Grand National) race on a dirt track, Richard Petty scored his 117th career
victory. He took the lead on lap 89 of 200 in the Home State 200 at State
Fairgrounds Speedway in Raleigh, NC and lapped the field twice. Neil Castles
finished 2nd. Even Petty was a little wistful at race's end although dirt
tracks only accounted for 31 of his victories. The top 10 drivers on dirt
are:
1. Lee Petty (43)
2. Herb Thomas (42)
3. Buck Baker (40)
4. Tim Flock (36)
5. Ned Jarrett (34)
6. Richard Petty (31)
7. Junior Johnson (23)
8. David Pearson (22)
9. Speedy Thompson (17)
10. Fonty Flock (15)

I can't imagine today's cars on dirt. I can't imagine very many of today's drivers on dirt. Stewart, Schrader, Elliott, Geoff Bodine, Spencer....that's about it. It would be fun, though...let each of them have about a $5000 budget, build a stock, let them bang it out. I'd pay to see it.

Arca still races on a dirt track every year. I haven't seen it on TV, but I've seen pictures and it looks fun. Dirty, but fun!

There is still part of the Fairgrounds speedway in Raleigh Standing today!

Pretty good subject Hardscrabble!

Dirt is awesome. I went to both Outlaws races at the dirt track at Lowes and I went to the Busch and Cup races on the same weekend!

If I could only pick one race to go to for the weekend I would have definately picked the Sprint car race on the dirt !!!

Lets experiment and see how they do :) It would be very interesting...I think Winston Cup should have a few dirt races just to vary it up a little bit kinda like Tennis(Grass, Hardcourt, Indoor, Clay)

Stewart and Schrader both raced on Dirt in an ARCA race about a month ago (the weekend before Richmond). Schrader drove one of his cars and Stewart drove a car for Andy Petree in a two race deal (ARCA race were he finished second and the Truck race at Richmond that he won). They never showed the race on Speed which is a bumber because the clips from the race looked really cool.
