Scanner Help

I am going to the Kansas races in a couple of weeks. I have been going to it the last couple of years without a scanner. This year I want to take a one. I need some help in buying a scanner. Some things you need to know. For right now this is the only race weekend I attend. What are some good entry level models? What is audio modification and is it necessary? Are the quality of headphones important? Can you listen to the MRN broadcast? Do all scanners have a lock out feature? Can you scan just a group of drivers? Any help will be appreciated.

I've brought my own to the track and I have used the ones you can rent at the track. I personally wouldn't buy one just yet and see what Nextel has to say about them next year. You can rent one pretty reasonable at the race track and they can program them for you by computer. You can rent them for the weekend and they will program them for you for both days. And you will have the best equipment if you rent them to. just my .02.

bowtie is right, wiseman. Don't buy one just yet. Tracks have wonderful equipment at reasonable prices. Plus, they will show you how to use it to get the most benefit.

Yes, you can get the radio broadcast.

Word of advice --- don't try to listen to too many drivers at once. I never scan more than 3 at any one time. You'll wind up missing important conversations. Just pick 2 or 3 favs, and stick with them.

thanks for the advice and I think I'll take you up on it, but one question - Is nextel going to prohibit using scanners at tracks because at $40 - $50 rental it seems that you could buy a good used setup for the price of 3 rentals? I will continue to attend this race year after year. Also, should I rent at the track or do it through the mail. I have to work on Friday so I won't get to the track until Sat.

If you are going to rent them, then I would do that when you get to the track.

Here is a little bit of info. regarding purchasing. Visit Radio Shack here to get an idea of what you will be spending.

I don't see Nextel prohibiting scanners at the track. Wouldn't be a smart decision on their part.

Maj you are right but you never know what they will be offering, maybe bigger and better than scanners. I don't figure they will be banning them either.

I think it'll run you about $30 to rent one at the track. If you are going with someone else...ask about a splitter and a 2nd set of headphones so the other person can enjoy also.

FYI...we bought my dad a scanner last Christmas from Radio Shack and I believe it was $160 & the headphones were $50.

P.S. They have been to known to run out of rentals at Michigan, but it was usually on Sunday morning for the Cup race. Get it on Saturday if you decide to wait until you go to the track.
