Scanner owners, I have questions......

I have a question… Who owns their own scanner set-up? What I’m looking for are recommendations for a great racing scanner package, i.e. 200 channel scanner, two pair of headphones with intercom. What “package” or combination of accessiories do you have or would you recommend?

You just opened up a can of worms there pal. Many of us here have our own set-ups and they are as varied as the day is long. You can find a bunch of places that sell scanners and headsets, but be sure and get what you want. One thing you might want to think about is being able to talk to your partner during the race. But that option can raise the price a lot. One option of that is to look on ebay for a set of Radio Shack headphones with intercom. They don't make them anymore, but they work pretty good. However, the phones aren't the best in the world and if you want better ones, the box won't work with them. As for scanners, the sky is the limit. They are getting cheaper and cheaper and better and better. One thing that I learned a long time ago is to get a scanner that uses AA batteries. That way you can have an unlimited supply in your scanner bag. One race in Richmond, our batteries ran dry before the race started and they were propriatory batteries, so we went the entire race without. Since then, I've found ways around that, but it's only for emergency. Also, we've now purchased a much better scanner that you can program on your PC. These days, the wife and I have separate scanners but are connected together with our intercom from RS. My favorite seller for setups is Racing Electronics. But there are many other places.

a similar question...is there a site that has the most up to date frequencies?

Lots of good tips, thanks! I've heard good things about Racing Electronics. They seem to have some nice "package" deals on their website. I think they usually have a trailer out at the track (Phoenix International) whenever NASCAR comes to town, so getting updated info and frequencies wouldn't be a problem. I'll continue to do my homework on the subject, I have plenty of time until the next race to get more advice on this subject and make a intelligent decision. As far as FanView is concerned being in Arizona the screen would be extremely difficult to see in direct sunlight. Not to knock anyone that has FanView or wants one, but besides the instant replays of the accidents why would you want one?

FanView is hard to see in direct sunlight.
Frequencies change from event to event.

I'm thinking about buying one. My understanding is that Sprint may cut the price to $250. I'd pay $250 for it. :idunno:

I rented one at Richmond and it rocked. :bounce:

That's some great information. Which scanner do you have now that can program with your PC?
I've got the Uniden SC230 and there are a couple of programs at least that you can purchase to program you scanner. This scanner has up to 2500 dynamically allocated channels, preprogrammed with NASCAR "Nextel" Cup seires, Busch series and Craftsman series races. Also are other major racing series as well as other things.

I got a great pair of headsets, and they have the intercom system so I can talk with someone, plus I have the scanner, accessories, and the carrying bag.
I got mine from RacingRadios. I use mine to listen to indycar races. Obviously, my priority frequency is Danica's. I also listen to the rest of the AGR team as well.

FYI...

I pre-programmed our scanner for the Busch race today and Cup race tomorrow using the frequencies listed here, which saved a lot of time once at the track. (For the record, we have a RadioShack brand scanner that we've had for a few years. It works great! We have a splitter for 2 headphones, each with it's own volume control.) Those frequencies are extremely accurate, we needed to adjust only a few (they give you a frequency list with your Program). Thanks Bucky :)

I usually either listen to MRN or the TV guys on my scanner, then I set my priority on Jeff Gordon and if he says anything it jumps over to him. I have 50 channels on my scanner and that is about 45 more than I use.

Easier to change a handful at the track, then the whole thing. Glad it worked.

She's got a temper, too. I've heard her absolutely flip out over the radio before. I like that. :growl: :XXROFL:

Have you looked on tracks scan they have pre used deals. Don't know how much you want to spend but you could always go with a used scanner and get a new headseat. They also have the Nascar scan for 99 at radio shack and Sams club. But I like those ok.

Yeah I saw that $99.00 setup at Radio Shack. May not be to bad for starters.
Like I said though I need one with the intercom and at least two sets of headphones. Sounds like the headphones may be more important then the scanner quality wise.

Yep I have that radio shack scanner it works well, there's one on ebay it's like just headphones, no one ever get it, it stinks and doesn't have enough channels!:einstein: I don't know if Track scan is only on the computer but I'd go a day early to the track and see if they sell used ones. They're used but always in good shape at least I think!
