Scanners and Headsets....

I'm in the market for a scanner and headset. In the past I've used my cousin's (he has 2 headsets and the scanner) which we'll us in Daytona. But starting with the race at Texas I'll be on my own since there will be four of us going. Plus I'd like to have my own set anyway.

I'll most likely get a simple scanner like the Uniden 60XLT-1. But there are so many headset options I'm not sure which way to go. I've been flip flopping between a traditional headset and the in-the-ear type. Also, can regualr audio (for walkman/mp3 players etc..) noise cancelling headphones be used? There are some really nice ones out by Sony and others that look better and are less bulky but offer simila noise cancellation..

Also, where's the best place to buy these things online. I've been to the Racing Electronics and Racescanner.com...any other places?

First off what I have found you will need the bigger headset because of the engine noise, the smaller ones don't seem to block out enough engine noise so you can't hear whats going on. I had to try different ones until I found a set that worked for me.

You may also try Radio Shack online to check some prices, when I bought mine they were the cheapest for what I was looking for. You'll need to decide how many channels you want. Mine is a 10 channel programable. I also found anything over that gets confusing to remember what teams you programmed on what channel.

RE is one of the best brands to get.... i paid 150 bucks for 2 headsets and the thingy

My first race I tried to program a bunch of the teams in, it was so frustrating I ended up just putting it on Tony's and leaving it there. Now I only program a select few, much easier to keep up with.
My scanner and headset came from Radio Shack also.

I got the radio shack race scanner too! It has been great so far!

Well it looks like I'll be pulling out my American Express, and it comes in red too!

My headsets have a separate volume control --- you might consider that. It helps me because I can turn it down when the hubby keeps turning up the volume on the scanner --- he's a bit deaf. LOL

Got my scanner and headphones from Radio Shack too. I also got a splitter and an extra set of headphones just in case anyone else wanted to listen. Of course they have to put up with me flipping back and forth between Schrader and Brian, they don't know what's going on. :D

Sometimes my dad will listen with me, and he'll be like who are we on now? Of course it's so loud that I don't know what he's saying, so he's just waving his hands around and mouthing words. He usually gives up when everybody around us gives him weird looks. Sometimes he's more entertaining than the race. Hmm, maybe you shouldn't buy a splitter.

We have to flip between Matt, J. Gordon, the MRN broadcast & Kenny Wallace. My daughter always wants to know how to get to Kenny's freq. quick. He has been known to let loose a lot of F-bangers when he runs the Busch cars in. We must have heard him blow up 3 or 4 times @ St. Louis a few years ago. My daughter loves it! He does seem to remain a lot calmer running a Cup car though. :idunno:

Wanna hear some funny stuff on the scanner? Listen to either Jr, Harvick, or Stewart. They blow off an average of about every 7 laps.

If your going to Bristol, forget the scanner, and just wear the headphones. Can't hear anything anyways ^_^

True, but Bristol is the best! :D

When Jr and Robby get around each other, listen to Jr. He cusses him out over the scanner... haha.

Never hear Jr. talk a whole heck of a lot.:yawner:

I did hear Harvick fire his spotter during the race over the scanner at Michigan a few years ago.

I didn't have a problem hearing the scanner at Bristol. Ya might need better headphones? :idunno:

I bought mine at an Advanced Auto Store for less than $100.00 a few years ago. It works great at all the tracks I have been with it. ('dega, Texas, and Bristol) It has the vol. control for each ear.

i don't have a problem hearing at BMS but i have a really good set of headphones they have a 20db noise reduction. :D

Racing Electronics is where I got mine along with a couple of great headsets. Like TRL, mine have separate volume controls. They are red and look like the ones the teams use. Check it out here.

Well, I ended up going with the Pro-89 (200 channel, 10 banks, came w/race antenna and regular one) Race Scanner from Ratshack. It was on sale for $99 (from $139). Does anyone have any feedback on this one? Seems like a well featured scanner.

My question is this, on my cousins older scanner you could use the up and down arrows to scan through the programmed frequencies, but I can't seem to do that with this one. I programmed all the Hendrick cars and the radio/tv broadcasts. The manual is about the most confusing mess I've read in a while so any help would be appreciated.

TeamHendrick, that is the exact one that I have. I have mine programmed from the very first time and I haven't had to change anything. I actually have mine programmed with Busch, Cup, Truck and IRL cars for the Texas races. Oh, and the Broadcast channes, too. I usually just hit the SCAN button and it runs through until it picks up someone talking. At TMS, the folks from RadioShack have a set-up inside the track. They can usually answer any questions you have. They'll even program your scanner for you for a mere $10. Congratulations on your purchase. I don't think you will be sorry. I know I'm not. ;)

That's good to hear. I programmed about 20 drivers with all their channels by car number, and the radio/tv broadcasts too. I'll do the Busch/Truck programming when I get there.
