SCANNERS?

Ok, I'm seriously contemplating buying one off of Ebay since it's not any more than it costs to rent one at the track. My question is, how do you get the current frequencies at the track? I know they program the ones you rent. I've also seen someone actually sell them on Ebay. Does anyone own one who can fill me in on getting it programmed once I get to the track? Thanks.

The scanner rental trailers at the track have lists. They have been $5 to get one.

But, most of the time, someone around you will have a list that you can borrow. :)

I have a 200 channel Bearcat with two headsets(each with separate volume control), and the splitter that I'll sell for $100. Have 2 battery packs and the charger, too. Even have the direction book.

If you look around the day of qualifying, you'll usually find some NASCAR or Sprint person that will let you do a fan view rental for the entire weekend for free in response to a survey or something.

Buy you a scanner and some nice headsets. They are worth it. I have a Uniden 200 channel scanner myself along with 2 Racing Radios headsets. I listen to Danica Patrick and her pit crew during the IndyCar races, practice, and qualifications.

This set is a good set. I know at IndyCar races, they have spotter guides at an IndyCar trailer with each driver's car, number, and radio frequency. These are free. Im not sure what NASCAR has.

Yorkie, no sweat. You'll find all the frequencies you want and then some once you get your scanner. As MRM said, you can find them on the internet free, just google them. But for a fin, you can get them at the track and those are updated. Once you get them, they seldom change. BTW, if you ever go to your local track, you can use the scanner there as well. We have two scanners and I'm looking at buying another set of headphones as our have worn slap out, and that is two sets! We use the heck out of them and don't attend any big races anymore.

Actually, if you have a scanner, just take it to one of the Racing Electronics trailers and they'll program it for you for free.

Thanks everyone! I hope the one I wanted is still for sale. It seems to me to buy one since it's not going to cost any more than it is to rent one for one race. I'd only have to pay again the following year to rent one again. This one only has one headset, but my daughter isn't all that interested in listening since she's only going to keep me company. I appreciate all your advice!

I wouldn't worry too much about missing a particular sale price. Prices are going to be low for the foreseeable future on most manufactured item. Stores would rather sell items "cheap" than carry high inventory costs. Shop around, chances are you might find a better deal.

$25 in right in the ballpark for me! I was surprised to see one at that price. Now that I think about it, I got tied up doing a flyer and forgot to check back on one that was under $12 at the time I looked with 2 hrs left. I'll have to see what it sold for. It was brand new, too.

Darn it!! See what I get for procrastinating?!! NADA!!! Turns out the one that had 2 hrs left sold and the one I had been watching was sold also. I'll bet anything someone who didn't win the cheap one bought the one I had been watching and I had been watching for a while. Oh well .... I'll have to keep looking.

$25! If you found a good one at that price, get it. I would buy a scanner with at least 200 channels on it. I have the Uniden Bearcat 95XLT.

A lot of them that I'm seeing have 100 channels which are in the lower range and come with the headset - The Nascar licensed ones. Is that enough just for a race? Some also have features like police scanners, etc. They have more channels, do more, etc., but don't come with any headphones; some say earbuds, and of course, more expensive. Hmmm... I'm just thinking.. my son-in-law is a volunteer firefighter and there's always a radio going off - weather, fire, etc. Although, I think he just carries a beeper and the other one stays in the house, but maybe not?? Can't hurt to ask him though, esp. since I'm taking his wife with me for the weekend. LOL ;)

100 channels is quite enough --- it's confusing to try to listen to more than 2 or 3 drivers at a time --- you can't tell who's talking.

unles you have mikey, jimmy, and elliot sadler all at the same time.

Thanks TRL! ROFL Mag. OMG... who could stand listening to Mikey? He probably never shuts up! Accccck. "Well, I can always put my leg over my head if I make it to VL. Yeah, that would be cool! I can do all kinds of stuff. Holy $hit... what was that on the track? You mean there's other cars? WTH?! Oh crap! Now they went and hit me again! Didn't they?! "

GOT ONE!

OK, I got this brand new off of Ebay for $32 + $8 for shipping, so I paid a total of $40. Most of the rentals were $50 at the track, so I'm happy with this. It was sitting at 24.99 for a couple of days and then someone just HAD to try to bid against me and pushed the price up. Oh well, most of the others like this, the asking prices range from $78 all the way up to $149! What I liked about this one vs. some of the others is the cover headphones come with it besides just earbuds. Some didn't even come with earbuds. Oh yeah, it has 100 channels.

And yes, I picked the Jeffy one. What else did you expect? LOL
