Jenna Fryer of the Associated Press reports that Speed has a clause in the contract that states he must be ranked 16th or higher by the start of the Chase or Red Bull can opt out of the contract.

All he's gotta do is win the next 3 races........he'll be just fine....

Another one that rode the career express to Cup with not enough time in the minors.

I like Speed and think that he stayed of out trouble for the most part, but I also think he was just in over his head.

Jeez, I hope all the drivers don't start getting performance clauses in their contracts or there could be trooooooubllllllle...

He just didn't have what it took to cut it i guess.

i'm going to have to relearn everyone's car number once again. :(

That's cause you're old.

No I don't think that is correct . I will always think of it as the Winston Cup Series. I shorten it to Cup Series to avoid embarassment . It has to do with Nascar coming up with a new series sponsor every few years . They can chose to call it whatever they want, but we can choose to use out own terms. Like Charlotte Motor Speedway , did anyone other than the media call it Lowes? What is it now? What will it be next year? It's just Charlotte to me.

Kinda like Infineon....will always be Sears Point to me.

Those sponsors aren't paying me to say their names, so I don't say them.

Just where would Nascar be today if it hadn't been for Winston?

Probably a few more non-smoking fans.....just kidding...relax, seriously though I do miss the red&white paint schemes all over the track.

It was a long 30+ year run with Winston as the sponsor but all good things come to an end. Heck, I remember going to the races and they were giving cartons of cigarettes away. Those were the days. That was slowly reduced to half cartons, and then down to a three pack of smokes, and finally none @ all. Tobacco products have become taboo by society. I'm not sure how that translates to being NASCAR's fault though. It's not like they were going to be allowed to continue thanks to our government. As recently as this year new FDA rules came into affect that prevent tobacco sponsorship. June 22nd, 2010 was the cutoff. You're certainly entitled to direct your displeasure to NASCAR for switching sponsors but the sponsors are what keeps this sport going.

As far as switching sponsors every couple of years. NASCAR picked up their first sponsor in 1971. That was Winston. They ran through 2003. That's when NEXTEL took over. SPRINT purchased NEXTEL in 2005. In 2008 SPRINT dropped the name NEXTEL to have the single brand name. So from that point on it was simply know as SPRINT. Three names, basically two sponsors over almost a 40 year period. I figured maybe there were some fans out there that didn't know or remember the details.

Where's Ernie Irvan and the #2 car? No longer do these guys have to move up from the bottom, now they have to start at the top. But hey, isn't that what today's youngster expect? Paying your dues is old school.

:beerbang: It's the Winston Cup for me, too.

And it's always been Charlotte for me.
