Breakthrough driver of 2006
Denny Hamlin

Most dissappointing season
Kurt Busch and Jamie McMurray (not really sure McMurray was a surprise though)

Breakout season
Kasey Kahne

Biggest comback
Dale Earnhardt Jr. (i really didnt expect this team to come back so quickly, i honestly thought this would pretty much be a rebuilding year because of last year. I gotta say im extremely proud of the 8 team this year.)

I don't think Junior did that good this year. Guys that didn't make the Chase just did that much worse. Performance wise, Junior was the worst guy in the Chase through Richmond.

Hamlin was impressive, but I also think he's arrogant and it's gonna get him in trouble next season.

Stewart did have an impressive season but he didn't make the Chase. He's just evidence the Chaser needs to be changed.

Breakthrough driver of 2006
Denny Hamlin (I don't think many people saw this coming)

Most dissappointing season
Ryan Newman closely followed by Biffle (I might have given this a tie except Biffle did win the last race, Newman did not win a race and was no competitive most weeks)

Breakout season
Kasey Kahne (most wins, ran up front most weeks)

Biggest comback
Jeff Burton (without a doubt, people gave up on him after 2001)

If I may, let me give my own awards.

Biggest same old, same old... Mark Martin. What a shame that this guy will always be known as the best driver never to win the title. There've been many champs that will never or would have never achieved what Mark did.

Second biggest same old, same old... Jack Roush. If Jack wasn't fielding teams for the Cup series, Ford would be sitting on the side lines.

Biggest manufacturer disappointment... RYR. This year, the team that brought up Davey Allison, lost not only a former champion, but his sponsor and an up and coming driver. The future of this group is still up in the air.

Biggest hype of the year... Jaun Pablo Montoya. JPM might become a terrific NASCAR driver, but even before he completed on lap in the Cup series, the press had the fans bowing at his feet.

Biggest hype DUD of the year... Michael Waltrip. Mikey is much like Kenny Wallace, all mouth and personality, very little talent.

Most anticiapated cross-over driver... Danica Patrick. Dannie caught the world by storm last year at the Indy 500, but that won't carry her to much else.

Most castigated rookie of the year... David Ragen. David must learn that he can't race favored drivers. He won't only get the ire of the fans, but of the NASCAR brass as well. Afterall, NASCAR must please the plebes.

Most protracted carreer... Bill Elliott. Most probably would have given this award to Morgan Shephard, but Morgan does most of the work himself while Bill uses those sponsors so that he can be a back marker.

And last but not least...

The absolute biggest DUD of the year for the third year running... The annual awards show. How long will this proceedure continue to be a mockery of TV? Me thinks that Brian France has watched SNL a bit too much.
