The nominees for the second class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame will be announced tonight. It's my understanding the 20 leftovers from last year's nominees will remain and be joined by 5 new nominees.

Five more nominees will be inducted into the hall of fame next year. David Pearson is a cinch to get in this time. Many people, including myself, left like he should have gone in last year over Bill France Jr. If he doesn't get in this year, they should blow up the building and forget about it.

You can wait until the announcement has been made, but who are your five that you think should and will go into next year's class? Here are mine:

David Pearson - 105 wins in only 574 starts
Lee Petty - 54 wins, first Daytona 500 winner, 3-time series winner
Darrell Waltrip - 84 wins, 3 championships
Cale Yarborough - 83 wins, 3 straight championships
The Wood Brothers - 97 wins as car owners, David Pearson and Cale Yarborough were just two of their drivers

Great list, MRM, they all should have a spot in the HOF.

However, I would scratch the Wood brothers because they are still active in the sport.

I would also scratch DW, not because he doesn't deserve a spot but because I just have never liked the guy, but that just a personal bias.

I think an owner/mechanic should be enshrined. How about Red Vogt, Smokey Yunick or Bud Moore? I'd also go with a driver like Herb Thomas, Fireball Roberts, Buck Baker or Freddie Lorenzen.

I guess we will find out in just a few minutes.

I agree.... Plus Allison.

Glenn Wood has been in the sport for sixty years. If he doesn't make it in this time he dang sure will make it the next time.

You really have to admire the Wood brothers for what they have done and are doing on limited dollars.

I totally agree. On top of that, he should lose his eligibility for at least 10 years simply for the over-promotion of his fictional Digger character. That and his Bogity, bogity, bogity catch phrase. :D

I did think about that. Because I wouldn't put Hendrick or Childress in because they'll still be around for many more years. The Wood Brothers probably won't see another win and who knows how much longer they'll be in the sport. But I went with them because of their win total and also how they innovated the art of the pit stop. They were the first team to have practiced what they would do and had a big advantage with that for a number of years.

I think the group I'd like to see make it in would be Lee Petty, Pearson, and Flock. Then you'd somehow have to decide the final two openings between Raymond Parks, Bud Moore, Bobby Allison, and Red Byron.

Dale Inman... He probably won't make it in this time, but it's great nonethless to see a mechanic nominated.

H.O.F.

Scratch Waltrip and put in Allison.

Theres been a Waltrip overload the last few years...............he would never shut up if he got in.

Agreed! Way too early for him anyway. Maybe he deservers to be in, but there are soooo many that deserve it way before him.

It's not even "His" phrase! It's lifted from a 1950's R&R song by Barry Mann entitled Who Put the Bomp

The lyrics, in part, are:

  • Each time that we're alone
    Boogity boogity boogity
    Boogity boogity boogity shoo
Sets my baby's heart all aglow
    And everytime we dance to
    Dip da dip da dip
    Dip da dip da dip
She always says she loves me so

Never once have I heard DW give credit for that line. Plagiarism...Grrrrrrrrr!!!!!!

How about that poker playin' monkey in The Coasters "Run Red Run"? The chorus has what was maybe the first "boogedy", after all, it had to come up somewhere else first to be included in the "Who put the ?" lyrics.
