September 5, 1960: Buck Baker wins the Southern 500 at Darlington, completing the final two laps on a flat tire. A Labor Day crowd of 80,000 watch 48 cars take the green flag and 17 finish the race nearly five hours later. Baker leads a race-high 175 laps; Richard Petty leads 106 but finishes sixth, three laps back. Rex White finishes second and Jim Paschal third.
