DES MOINES, IA (June 7) – Tim Shaffer is the new driver of the #6 Casey’s General Stores Maxim and will drive the car in Wednesday’s World of Outlaws Sprint Series event at LaSalle Speedway, car owner Lonny Parsons announced Monday.
Shaffer, the 1999 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year, replaces rookie Brian Brown as driver of the #6.
“We have hired Tim Shaffer as our driver,” Parsons said. “I feel like we need to put a more experienced driver in the car and get better results for our sponsor. Brian is a good, young driver with a bright future given enough time but, at my age and my sponsor’s age, we don’t feel like we have time to see that come about. I’m at the age where I don’t buy the extended warranty on anything. My sponsor has invested a lot of money in our team and we believe with a more experienced driver we can get better results for him.
“We’re pleased to have Tim drive our car. He has been starting toward the back in many races this year and has still produced good results. I think we have some things to offer each other. With Brian, I think it was just a matter of experience. We thought we got Brian enough seat time last season, but maybe we didn’t.”
Shaffer, who has driven the #83 Beef Packers Eagle for car owner Dennis Roth the last 2 ½ years, ranks ninth in the point standings. “The Steel City Outlaw” has recorded 14 top-10 finishes, including six in the top five, while starting in the middle of the field in most main events this season. Tim has won six “A” Features in his World of Outlaws Sprint Series career, but has not visited victory lane this season.
“We’ve been struggling the last three or four weeks,” Shaffer said. “We weren’t getting the job done, Dennis wasn’t happy and I wasn’t happy, so we decided to part ways.
“I think driving the #6 car will work out fine. Hopefully, we can get into victory circle soon. We’ve been trying to do that all year I know we’ll all give 100 percent. I’m looking forward to working with Lonny and (crew chief) Davey Whitworth.”
Brown, the nephew of 2001 World of Outlaws Sprint Series champion Danny Lasoski, has been contacting car owners seeking new racing opportunities. Successive top-10 finishes at Hagerstown Speedway and Grandview Speedway pushed Brian into 13th place in the point standings recently.
