Texas executes Mexican national who was denied consul visit
Medellín was one of six Houston gang members who brutally raped and strangled two girls, Elizabeth Pena, 16, and Jennifer Ertman, 14, as they walked home on June 24, 1993. According to testimony, Medellín said the girls had to die so there would be no witnesses to the gang-rape.
He was 18 at the time of the crime, and 33 when he was put to death.

Secure the borders and this wouldn't have been an issue. He'd still be running around raping and killing but in his own country...

The only shame I see here is what happened to those little girls and their families. :(

Oh, and the fact that we paid for his legal and medical expenses and clothed and fed this a-hole for 15 years before he got what he deserved kinda sucks too.

While I say "good riddance to bad rubbish", having watched this story from the beginning, I still wonder what on earth the parents of the girls were thinking when they let them walk home along the RR tracks, through the woods, after midnight. I think they ought to feel a little guilty, also.

Don't you think that they do feel guilty? I wonder what they have gone through all this time, how many times they have cried themselves to sleep, thought about what they could have done different, thought that they would give their own lives to get them back? We might agree that they we negligent with their children, but when you and I were of that age, this sort of thing just didn't happen, or was very rare. Even terrible parents for the most part, love their children and losing one is like stabbing them in the heart. Could they have prevented it? Probably so, but we know that today's children have much more liberties than in the past, even 14-15 years ago. Good riddance to the bastard and I wish that the parents were the one that controled the finish.

buck, the reason I said that was because I watched all this play out on TV. The parents were calling for blood all the while downplaying the fact that their daughters called home, asked to be picked up --- the parents were busy, so the girls walked home.

I could just never understand what the parents found more important than their girls.

I have absolutely no sympathy for any of the human garbage that did those horrible things to the girls.

TRL, not having any knowledge of this kind of puts me in a neutral position. I have no doubt that had I been kept up to speed on what happened, I would have screamed bloody murder about the parents as well, and some of the blame could be placed at their feet. The only thing that I meant was that I imagine that they went through holy hell after what happened, no matter what they did. And, if they were negligent, as it appears that they were, their own guilt would have been worse, assuming the parents are normal. I wonder if any of this has affected their marriage. One might well blame the other and so on. It's just a terrible thing that happened and they will live with it for the rest of their lives.

Oh, buck, I'm sure the parents have regretted that decision, and will regret it for the rest of their lives. I can't even begin to imagine the pain of losing a child, and knowing that you could have prevented it.
