The first trip of the 2006 Thunder Tour to Outlaw Motor Speedway was a good one for Shane Essary as he picked up the O'Reilly MLRA win on Saturday night. The victory was the first with the series for the Aurora, MO shoe after many close calls over the years.
Jack Sullivan would lead the field of 25 cars to the green flag and immediately jumped out in front of second row starter Mike Brown to take command of the 30 lap event. Essary had moved into the third spot behind Brown on the second lap and found the way around for the runner up position two laps later as Dwaine Hottinger followed him through for the third position. Essary began to stalk Sullivan for the lead looking for the quick line around the Oklahoma 3/8 mile and the spot at the front. While Essary and Sullivan worked the front of the field things began to heat up behind them as Purkey and Charlie Randolph both worked past Hottinger to battle Brown while Justin Wells moved in to battle with the trio on lap 9. Randolph found his way around Purkey for fourth as Wells moved past Hottinger for sixth on lap 10. Randolph set out to track down the leaders as he moved past Brown on lap 11 and the grab the third position. The front runners continued to set a torrid pace and Essary made his move as the race closed in on the halfway point and moved past Sullivan on Lap 19 to take over the point. Once out front Essary quickly began to distance himself from the field and build a substantial lead over Sullivan as Randolph moved around Brown for the third position. The lead pack would remain the same over the final laps as Essary raced under the checkered flag to pick up his first O'Reilly MLRA victory. Sullivan held on for second with Randolph, Brown, and Wells rounding out the top five.
Heat race wins went to Al Purkey, Justin Wells, and Mike Brown as 25 five cars signed in to compete in three heat races. Johnny Bone Jr. picked up the Weld Wheels Hard Charger Award for his run from 23rd to 12th in the A Feature while Jason Bodenhamer collected the Performance Bodies Nose Piece Award.
Next up for the O'Reilly MLRA is a Memorial Weekend trip to I-80 Speedway for the annual Alphabet Soup Race on Sunday, May 28.
